Like everyone else, I want to keep my notebook running efficiently and smoothly. I'm using a trial download of PerfectDisk 8 and received an email today promoting a 3-day Spring sale for $29.95 instead of the regular $39.95.

My question is, even at $30, is PerfectDisk that much better than the built-in MS Disk Defragmenter? BTW, I've seen Raxco's comparison charts, etc.

    Thanks.

    Bill

Edit: The title of this thread, as pointed out below, should have referred to PerfectDisk 8, not 2007. I had looked at Diskeeper 2007 and mixed the two names.

perfect disk is the best defragmenter out there, ive used them all, its faster and defrags better, one thing that it does that the others don't (or didnt when i used them) is it can defrag the system files in use when in windows, the others cant because the files are being used, what it does is restart in dos and defrags there. its way more effiecent than all other defraggers. im sorry to say deedeeman you should have bought perfectdisk. i havent even used the 2007 version yet, i used 8 and that was amazing im pretty sure 2007 is no less if not better.

I'm using Perfectdisk 8, and it works very well. It defrags better than ms's built in, and it can perform offline defrags, where it defrags system files (what windows calls "files that can't be moved"). I have it set on a nightly schedule of defrags with an offline one every sunday.

ohh forgot to add that the one built into windows is originally made by symantec and microsoft bought it, which is why it really sucks.

deedeeman: its the best defragmenter HANDS DOWN. try the trial if you are having second thoughts on buying another piece of software and see if you believe what we just said, and if you do i guess ud be happy to know u made a better decision.

There's not much difference between perfect disk and diskeeper... So spending another $30 for another disk defrag prog is not worth it...

For years, I used Diskeeper. Then I had some issues where Diskeeper Tech support wouldn't respond to anything I sent for months. Downloaded the Perfectdisk 8 demo and never looked back. My machines seem faster and more responsive with Perfectdisk 8. Any questions I had were immediately answered by the technical staff. Updates to the software are frequent and each build gets better and better. I am a Raxco fan for life, at this point. It is far better, in my opinion, than Diskeeper. The best money I have spent in a long time

How much does PerfectDisk usually charge for rebates? There is a $6.00 option for "1-Year Support & Upgrade Protection."

Have you tried JKdefrag, I switched from Perfectdisk to it. By the way it is freeware. Google JKdefragGUI and get the gui frontend. Both 32 bit & 64 bit versions and Vista compatable

I like Diskeeper better, tried both for a while, I think that perfectdisk is rather annoying (I uninstalled it can't remember why). Diskeeper is very fast and efficient, but whichever one you can get for a lower price I'd say get that, you wouldn't be missing out on much if you got one or the other.

ok but you are both wrong, perfect disc has way better performance, and is much more efficient i know because ive used all of them including the symantec (windows) one, i can gaurentee you both that you are wrong.

well everyone is entitled to their own opinion.... you can't just judge people and say they're wrong and you are right... perfect disk may work better for you but to others it would be diskeeper that will perform best... perfect disk in my experience is a little better than diskeeper but if you are already have diskeeper i would not advice you to buy perfect disk coz for me that's a waste of money... and besides a faster OS does not only depend on these programs...

yeah you are correct everyone is entitled to there opinion, but remember that the question is which one is better, not which one do you like or did you buy, and that is a fact it cant be opinion, this one has better performance, defrags better, so that means its better. opinion of which one you like or bought is different

I think what qohelet is getting at is that support must be given to state that in fact one is better than the other, something more than "So-and-so is better, so there!" Have any tests or reviews compared the two?

What I was really after in the OP (even though I mangled PerfectDisk with Diskeeper's "2007"), was a comparison of PerfectDisk with the Windows Vista built-in defragmenter. Nobody has said, thus far, that PD is a waste of money, that the built-in defragmenter is all you need, etc.

My second question is this extra $6.00 charge (regularly $8.00) for the 1-year support and free upgrade if such comes out within a year. Any thoughts on that?

    Thanks,
    Bill

I was replying to this not to the OP!

Man you misunderstood me completely!!! :D

If you read again my posts in this thread, you will see that i was replying to Deedeman's post (quoted above)... deedeeman as his post suggests has the intention of buying perfect disk as his replacement to his diskeeper... i said that this move is not worth the money because "there is not much difference" between perfect disk and diskeeper..."

I also said that perfect disk based on my experience is a little "better" than diskeeper but buying it if you already bought diskeeper is not worth it since it doesn't have much advantage with diskeeper and making an OS faster does not only depends on these programs...

so basically what i'm trying to say in all my posts here is you don't need to buy perfect disk if you already have diskeeper coz its a waste of money for me...

in Your first reply on my post here in this thread, you said you disagree with me that perfect disk has only little difference with diskeeper. you said diskeeper is "far" better than perfect disk... but here i disagree, as i said in my post, because based on my experience it doesn't have much difference and other also experience the same... (some said that diskeeper is better than perfect disk)... see this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=32582

if i will reply to the OP, i would say "yes" perfect disk is worth buying for coz MS default defragmenter is lame, IMO.

so i suggests that before you reply and pass judgement to any posts, I suggest you read the posts carefully and see where the posts are replying at...

LOL... what i'm trying to say in my posts is that deedeman does not need to buy PD if already has diskeeper coz it has only little difference (note: i also think that PD is better than diskeeper)..

well in your OP i would say go buy PD because it's worth it and it's a lot better than built-in vista defragmenter... PD is not a waste of money.. here's the comparison between PD and vista defragmenter...

    http://www.raxco.com/products/perfectdisk2k/comparevista.cfm

in your second question... yeah for me extra $6 is fine... usually PD has a lot upgrades in a year that fixes some bugs...

Yes, I understood you were responding to deedeeman, and I agree with the thrust of your advice to him.

And thanks for your input about PerfectDisk.

BTW, what other suggestions would you make to keep a computer running as efficiently as possible without spending the proverbial arm and leg? Besides a good defragmenter, I use CCleaner, Norton Internet Security 2007 (through the trial period, at least), Windows Defender, Spybot, and Ad-Aware.

There are many tweaks that you can do make your pc running smoothly all the time... Here's a detailed tweak guide that you use to optimize your OS (vista or xp alike)...

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=110329

btw, i suggests you just use another antivir like kaspersky internet security... it's a lot faster (not a resource hog) and effective than NIS 2007 (though 2007 is much faster than the previous version).. i don't used spybot and ad-aware coz they slowed down my pc and besides if ever i encountered any spyware (which i believe you would not because you know... :) ) i just googled the spyware removal solution for it and manually removed it..

    Enjoy!

personally I have diskeeper 2007 and I'm very happy with it..but I "have" heard great reviews by word of mouth on perfectdisk...... I believe as another poster said, if you already have one or the other then it makes no sense to buy the other product... but if you are looking to purchase one.. then maybe perfectdisk will be the better choice for you....

I am wondering if anyone has heard of or tried this one??

i tried it just recently. here's what i found:

    1. it's faster than the default windows defrag.
    2. it very easy to use.
    3. nice and neat UI.
    4. i like it's blinking dots when defragmenting. :D
    5. use very little resources.

    cons
    1. no defrag scheduling.
    2. only single disk/partition defragmenting.
    3. no option for bootfiles defrag.

These cons are minor for me since i have some extra tools for defragmenting bootfiles. If i have to choose between the built-in windows defrag and auslogics defrag, i will definitely choose this!!! this is a lot better than the built-in defrag and of course because it's free. :)

Thanks much--I like good and free! I'm not that interested in defragging with an automatic schedule. What would you use to defrag bootfiles?

In xp i used tunexp to defrag and rearrange my boot files... however, i have not seen a program that can do this in vista... PD i think can do this in vista but as we all know it ain't free...

you can try vista manager, also, to tweak your vista so that it would run fast and smooth... it's not free though but i can give a license as a gift... :D
