I use Diskeeper for defragging
-
I'd recommend PerfectDisk for defragging.
-
And I recommend jkdefrag. -
It only affects performance while it's creating a restore point.
This happens:
- when installing some software
- when installing updates through Windows Update
- as scheduled - by default this is at midnight each day and also at every bootup... but you can run Task Scheduler and adjust the schedule if you want.
And it's saved my butt a few times.
As for defrag... Vista's built-in gets it done for me (though admittedly without very much pizazz). I sometimes use it on the command line... run a command prompt as admin and then "defrag -?" to see the options. -

Diskeeper is not free. Vista defrag is not recommended by most ppl. And it's slow as hell for sure.
I use smart defrag. -
Before spending a lot of time (and possibly money) looking for the ultimate defrag tool, read this article: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3722466&postcount=11 (If you're in a hurry, just look at the last page.)
That said, Vista's defrag is not designed to be fast, or show diagrams with pretty colors... it's designed to defrag unobtrusively in the background while you're doing other stuff. If you'd rather have something that runs quickly and shows cool graphs, then pick something else. -
Nothing wrong with the Vista Defrag - it get's the job done - same fpr XP really.
Leaving the laptop idling for hours will do some good too as Vista will start to self optimize.
System Restores - They will just write a file when you change something - or if you have a very agressive Windows Defender it can write a system restore at every start-up.
Either way - during actual use it has no effect on yur performance. -
Diskeeper is not free, but it's an excellent defrag utility. Used to run the 2008 and later 2009 versions on Vista; still use the 2009 Pro on my XP systems.

what about Vista's default defragger? whats wrong with that?
-
It's just that people have to spend money... ()

i use auslogics disk defrag its freeware and its fast at defrag......downloaded it yesterday it did a good job at it.

I use Smart Defrag. It's a free program that works well and you can set schedules if you want and you can also optimize for performance if you want.
I use the restore function but I limit the ammount to be stored to about 5Gigs.
I have also set it to make a restore point once every 6 days rather than the default restore point every day. You can always make an additional restore point if you're making serious changes or want to ensure back up of critical data. -
Auslogics BoostSpeed !
