Of course the main factors people will consider in deciding which version of Win7 to get will be price and features.
I'm wondering though, if there may also be any performance difference between the versions.
One could speculate, for example, that Home Premium might run faster than Pro, due to less background services, less use of system resources, etc. The Starter version then, still faster.
However, if there is a feature in the higher versions that enhance performance, the results could be opposite.
Does anyone know of any tests comparing the performance of the different versions of Windows 7?
Anyone used more than one version, on the same machine, and noticed a speed difference?
Just curious.
Thanks.

no difference between the versions. there are slight difference between 32bit and 64bit, but as those apply to all versions, and work with the same licencees, that doesn't count.

In theory they are all designed to have the same performance as Dave said.
Although Starter may be limited... anybody got any details? -

same performance again. just disabled some features that can shift performance, like aero.

For the cost, I can't justify Ultimate x64 over Professional. You get a few more windows programs, but i've found for my uses it's not worth it. I'd advise 7 pro if you have not yet already purchased.

What advantages does Pro have over Home Premium, other than the "XP Mode"? (I plan to do a dual-boot with XP. Also, I heard that "XP Mode" is slow.)
Regarding performance differences between 32 and 64 bits, what are those differences? -

xp mode isn't slow. it's just a virtual machine. they are slower than native, but not much. nowadays.
google up the versions to see all feature differences.
64bit is mainly for allowing >4gb ram. but as it's an architecture change, the 64bit gives some opportunity for apps to be better optimized. it can (sometimes) lead to 20% gains in performance. but that's only special cases. normally there isn't really a difference. -

^ I use many 32Bit and dont really notice any slow downs or anything. All of my games are 32Bit(Mw2,BF2142,Cod4,AC,Shift) they play pretty good. I used 32Bit win7 RC,but I got retail win7(X64).
