Performance slowed to a crawl in XP...

Okay, basically when I do ANYTHING, my computer slows to a crawl. I just reinstalled XP (migrated back from Vista), and now I'm dealing with this crap.

I'm watching the screen re-draw itself here!

Installing Oblivion, scanning a PDF in from my scanner, running a NAV Scan, all of these can individually bring my computer to a halt. I'm getting a little mad here!

Anyway, I did the dual core hotfix, and /usepmtimer, and the PerfEnable(whatever after that I don't remember right now) registry fix, but I'm not getting any extra performance here. I'm showing 100% usage, but the numbers do not add up in the Task Manager.

Again, I emphasize that I'm watching the screen re-draw itself AND the mouse move an inch at a time.

Please help.

No defragging going on, and I did recently defrag.
It does it with both Cats 7.4 and the basic XP driver (after uninstalling the Cats).
AV Scanning...I don't think so, as my scanner only runs once a week or when told.
Indexing...I've always run with that enabled but I'll try.

Hey...I've got a process set18.tmp that just started up...what is that?

Edit: It appears to be related to the Oblivion installer...when I ended it that killed Setup.exe. Also, when rebooting that Oblivion installer a different file (set29.tmp) showed up.

 

Okay...I fixed the /usepmtimer (I originally had /useptimer by mistake), but it still crawls. Fortunately, it only crawls when installing Oblivion now...I'm not too sure if it is just Oblivion or every new program install, and I'll have to install something else later to see. But something is still wrong here...

I'm running NAV 2007 right now...and if it finds nothing I'm going to install another freeware tool and see as well.

I'm also letting Oblivion finish installing, and I'm going to install something else and see if the problem repeats itself.

 

well if it only happens while your installing programs it could be something related to your HDD or cdd/dvd drive
try Ccleaner too

 

Well, the DVD drive was recently replaced...and I haven't exactly had a good run of drives from HP. This is my 3rd or 4th one...not too sure as I've lost track.

Once the darn thing is done installing, I'll try with something else and see. CCleaner is for tomorrow.

 

if this happend in vista too then it may be the drives fault ,a faulty drive

or if everything fails try doing a clean install again
maybe that may help as it does to me too

 

Well well well...I popped my Knights of the Nine installer into my internal drive, had the same problem...pop the disc into my external drive and it runs fine.

Looks like I'm going to be contacting HP tomorrow...they owe me a brand new drive and not a darn refurb one...

 

I think I have been experiencing the similar problem.
to me it happens when using the cd/dvd.
the whole computer goes into slowmotion.
the mouse goes dragging its feet, and audio starts to stutter as well.
I'm on a similar configuration as you... HP 9420. So it might be related to them?

and no, it's not spywere or anything else. the pc is 2 weeks old, and it's been like this from the start.

there seems to be a common problem to some computers;

DVD Drive brings e 1505 to a CRAWL

there must be 5-6 threads I came across with similar problem on diferent brands.

here's a snapshot of my task manager.
I started copying a 150 DVD-->HDD and you can see what happens.
core one goes into overdrive, and core 2 stays lazy.

 

Installing from optical drive: What's the IDE interface transfer mode? Is it stuck in PIO? This Microsoft KB article is relatively recent and I wonder whether something in a windows patch increased the likelihood of the interface dropping into PIO mode once the ODD has a reading problem. There's no message popping up to say what happens.

I only did this.

WORKAROUND
To re-enable the typical, or faster, transfer mode for an affected device:
1. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
2. Click System Tools, and then click Device Manager.
3. Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers node.
4. Double-click the controller for which you want to restore the typical DMA transfer mode.
5. Click the Driver tab.
6. Click Uninstall.
7. When the process completes, restart your computer. When Windows restarts, the hard disk controller is re-enumerated and the transfer mode is reset to the default value for each device that is connected to the controller.




now it's in dma multi word mode 2...

If it happens again, change step 7 to go to the top of the list in Device Manager, right click and select Scan for hardware changes. This will normally trigger the re-detection without needing to reboot.

Yeah the DMA mode should fix night's problem too.

Also, you have a LOT of stuff running and in your start up. You can probably clean a lot of that out of there. There is a lot of that stuff that you don't need, or at least don't need to run on startup.

those are the bloody HP pre-installed programs which I definitely dont need.(2 weeks old PC)
I'll reinstall the windows to my own liking as soon as I get a couple of hours off.
there's 60+ programs booting... compared to about 20 I need.

Well I'll be darned...I'm stuck in PIO mode as well.

 

You can put it back into DMA mode without having to go to device manager by downloading this program called Pushdma2 by Dell. I use it whenever Windows puts the drive back into PIO mode.

 

Clean up some of those services, im only running 32 services now with a fresh install of XP, video drivers (no CCC) and everything else I need including games. Just set any program that auto starts when you boot not to do so.

Also if you are using the Intel wireless software ditch it and use the default XP, and just in case if you use WPA2 security on your router there is an update on micrsoft's website thats lets you use it with the default windows wireless app.

 

Well guess what guys...as soon as I enabled DMA mode everything worked as fast as it should have. The DVD drive ran as fast as it should have...

Unfortunately, the drive couldn't handle running at full speed and just died again. Looks like it is back to HP for another drive...

LOL man you have the worst luck with 'puters. Windows will switch to PIO when it detects too many disk errors on the hard drive, indicating it's about to die. Hope nothing important got lost.

 

Luckily the drive he was having difficulty with was his Optical, not his hard drive.

 

I would almost appreciate a hard disk failure right now...at least I make regular backups of my stuff . This optical drive continues to be a problem...the new drive they sent me was DOA.

Actually...my hard drive did fail on me two months ago...fortunately, the replacement works a lot better.
