Guys i need some help ..
for the past few weeks whenever i am using my computer...some or the other process is causing CPU spikes which last for hours & i am forced to shut down computer or cause it to smoke.
This started with Plug & Play service... i have Creative XMOD which if detached causes the CPU spikes for 30 mins or longer.
then its explorer.exe which is the secondary reason..
Any help?

use process explorer. itll tell you which program is consuming memory space, disk operation, and cpu time. great way to check for rogue processes that the builtin task manager doesn't report.
how i found out those stupid .net optimizing services keep slowing down my system. that and diskdefrag. -
Hi, are you saying the "plug & play service" and explorer.exe cause the CPU spikes problem? Maybe you want to lower the priority the plug & play service and see if that works.

Well, as to the probably more detrimental problem of the computer smoking, it sounds like you've got a rather major cooling problem. Even at full CPU usage your computer shouldn't be doing that. Do you have all the latest BIOS updates? Have you cleaned out the vents recently? And is there a fan utility you can use on your laptop to turn the fans on 100% when these CPU spikeds occur? Obviously these CPU spikes are a problem, but you ought to get the roasting/smoking problem fixed even if they aren't an immediate problem after you get the spike problem fixed.

the smell of overheating comes when CPU is at 100%
i think the fans aint cooling the entire chassis..
is there any software for AMD chips to control Fan speed / RPM? -
Exactly how hot is the CPU getting?
-
86 degree celcius
as i said..i can smell the heat -
You can smell heat?

The chassis is designed badly..it doesnt let the heat escape naturally..
i flashed the BIOS to latest few months back..it has a new Fan algorithm but its still not very effective.
So Bog..tell me how i can deal with cooling issues.
some app to increase Fan's RPM? -
SpeedFan might work; Ik8fan probably won't since it is designed for Dell computers.
Other ways to ensure optimal cooling:
- make sure the fan vents and exhaust are unobstructed
- clean the laptop for any dust using a can of compressed air and a vacuum cleaner
- consider spending ~$40 on a good laptop cooling pad
I would also check whether these CPU spikes (which are not very normal) are caused by any malware. -
Actually i am planning to sell-off my laptop...
i didnt enjoy the AMD experience that much mainly due to LOT of heat issues from very first day.
otherwise AMD Turion is great for usual stuff.
i do have a Passive cooling stand & i also tried active coolers. ...either its AMD or bad HP chassis or Poor BIOS algorithmm..... my laptop cant be called laptop..it just runs too hot for anyone.
during gaming..your pants can get ironed ..its that much heat. -
Yeah, I know what you mean... but just the other night I applied Arctic Silver 5 to the CPU; the temperatures dropped from 58C (idle) to around 50C. Consider applying high-quality thermal compound, because the stuff the manufacturers use is almost always poor poor quality.
Persistant CPU spikes are Roasting the processor
