please post your thoughts / opinions on this project, and i'll see if I can get a move on, on the coding side of things.

You looked into WinBubble? My 1st impression is that staying away from making Vista (and eventually W7) to runlike XP is a big plus
cheers ... -
well winbubble really isnt that bad in my opinion. But i guess there will always be those who do not feel the neccessity of tweaking vista, or are perhaps scared of the consequences. I personally believe tweaking is a good idea, to speed up a computer by a potentially high amount, for absolutely nothing. For security, I have only included very safe tweaks, and with each tweak a detailed description.
Besides all of these tweaks were taken from Les' Vista Tweaks Guide... so if tweaking is no good, why then is it included as a sticky in these forums? and why is my xp guide also included as a sticky?
cheers.... -
Seems fine..

Maybe change the background or color of the text. I couldnt read the words that well at a quick glance...then again, that might just be because the screenshots are of lower resolution.

Nice! What programming language are you using to write this?
You are writing the whole thing from scratch? Sounds fun lol! -
Would the majority of the NBR community and especially the moderators and site owners agree that disabling UAC is a "RECOMMENDED TWEAK"?
-
It's nice, but I would tweak the background coloring a bit..It's hard to read the text/words

I tweaked a lot, in the old XP days, and more so. Yet I haven't seen a real Vista tweak guide as of yet. Most, if not all current vista tweaks are based on registry and the understanding of how XP works, ignoring:
. that Vista is a total different OS
. that Vista has its own built in processes and performance management, learned and improved from XP, just like Windows 7 is going to be an improvement over Vista.
. that with SP2 now out, new users would most likely having 2nd thought about tweaking registy entries that belong to XP
So, tweak along, but paying more attention to the Vista environment.

Three words: DOCUMENTATION, DOCUMENTATION, DOCUMENTATION.
I spent days trying to convince the author of WinBubbles that since he was an amateur programmer he should document EVERYTHING that WinBubbles did behind the scenes. That way if something gets screwed up it is possible to manually go in and fix the registry (or whatever mechanism the tweak used).
I would recommend the same to you, amateur or pro. I won't use ANY tweak app on my machine unless I know precisely what the tweak does. I make my living with my computer and cannot afford to trust that the tweak is benign. I am not suggesting that there was anything wrong with the tweaks in WinBubbles, just that there was no way other than to try to use WinBubbles to undo what it did. The author kept (and continues to) promising to document the tweaks but never has. When called on it Lawrence hems and haws around with nothing but a series of lame excuses.

P.S. I agree the screen shots are hard to read. I like the background but you might consider fading it a bit. -
I have to agree, there needs to be more documentation of what exactly the program does (assuming you don't already have it). There also needs to be some more options - take the "Disable all startup programs" for instance. Will this turn off anti-virus software as well? And what about programs that you really do want to run at startup? And what determines "unnecessary services" or "unused Windows features"?
For Windows services/features, for example, it would be excellent if the program would give choices of which ones to enable, and give a good explanation of what each one actually does (services.msc is rather lacking on the good explanations). But the way the program is right now, I wouldn't use it for most of the tweaks it can do for fear of it changing far more than I want it to. And I'm not nearly as cautious about tweaks as Gary.
Gotta remember to take a look at your XP Tweak thread again though. Still haven't implemented most of those.
Oh, and I agree, the background probably needs to be a bit lighter. -

Just to clarify, I am not so cautious about tweaks as I am about "trust me I know what I am doing" tweaker apps. I have no problem playing around with documented tweaks that I apply myself or with tweaker apps that spell out exactly what they do.

Pictures of the Vista tweaking program i'm currently building. Post your thoughts!
