Which is the better of these two IM clients? I've used Trillian but didn't like it.

I haven't used Miranda, so I can't compare, but I can tell you that Pidgin can use pretty much any IM protocol out there; it is not only flexible in terms of working with other IM programs, it can also be extensively customized to your liking.

Digsby, I've found, is excellent. Much better than Pidgin in both stability and UI, which is very much like Trillian's. I switched from it because Pidgin was becoming very unstable, and Trillian didn't do the Google Talk protocol, and I'm very happy I found it.

is digsby as light as pidgin? i have noticed pidgin was 100% quicker on load then trillian.

EDIT: I have both digsby and pidgin running. under task manager:
    Digsby 66.5k K memory
    Pidgin 23k k memory
both are minimzed into my toolbar or w/e you call it.

There are several other advantages of using Digsby.
    - No matter which computer, you only need to login using your Digsby login.
    - Help checks e-mails and social networking sites.
Which is why Digsby uses more RAM than other programs. But last I read from the Digsby blog, they are working to minimize the RAM use.

Pidgin also checks emails and has support for social networking sites like facebook and myspace.

for facebook, you just have to download an extra plugin - myspace comes out of the box.

that advantage of only having to login to digsby account is also a major disadvantage - adds to the load up time.

i put both of them to start when windows loaded up
and i can tell you, digsby loaded almost 5-10 seconds after pidgin was done. it might of been because it was the first time digsby was loading when vista was, or it might not of been. but for now, im sticking to pidgin.

I also use Digsby and find it to be the best of all the multi-chat programs. I LOVE the single login feature.

Another thing that is good about Digsby: the pop-up when chatting. You can immediately read and reply while even browsing (without having to alt-tab). It is very good for me.

Try both, see which one is more comfortable to use for you. I've used Pidgin (when it was still called Gaim), but switched to Miranda, which I think is much better because it's more customizable. Personally I like the idea of having a core install with addons on top depending on what kind of functionality I want, but that's not for everyone because it does take a while to set everything up the first time. :)

In Digsby, when I have a chat window open with someone, there is a button for video/audio chat, but I never tried if it really works.
