    Hello

I have this small issue. Whenever I want to watch a dvd (using VLC or WMP with FFDshow codecs), I get "pixelated" video quality. I've alreay changed the input and output settings of VLC but with no avail. The video tutorial of vista media centre looked great but the two sample videos (bear & butterfly) looked bad, almost youtube-quality.

Does anyone know what causes this and how you can solve it? Or am I just too demanding? :D

OS is vista HP, resolution is WXGA+. Specs are in my sig.

this is a vague question but there are couple of reasons:
    1. the video's source: the video itself must be of low resolution.
    2. Poor configuration: in VLC increase the post processing to highest (6).
    3. Your native resolution must be high (u didnt mention) coz of which the upscale is causing problems.

    4. Try other encoders to establish the fact. Use DivX with WMP just to verify.
I dont know why people hate DivX... but i find it very user friendly & easy to use.

I have tried several dvd's of different quality and all have the same problem.
My native resolution is 1440x900 (WXGA+).

I will try the postprocessing thingy at home. I don't have any dvd's right now. How do I use Divx with WMP? Just install them? I know nothing about codecs.

try KMPlayer combined with CCCP codec pack.
I have a WUXGA screen and my dvds look perfect.

Myeah, maybe it's just me. I've noticed that I also have it when looking very closely at a picture. I guess I'm just sitting to close at the screen while watching a DVD.

I've also noticed that there are some nvidia settings for my screen that I haven't tested yet (it's still the standard configuration). I'll try that too this evening.

ya i thot so... ur native resolution is very high...so the graphic card has to upscale which causes low quality.

but if u use Codecs then the pixelation goes away.

if u want the fastest solution just go to divx.com and install DivX codec.. next time u open WMP..it ll automatically open up.

the other codecs are lighter, dont lag but are advanced & difficult to use for novice.

i suggest u give DivX a try then move on to advanced codecs which lot of NBR members use.

could you check that video overlay/acceleration is enabled?

ok.. you may have already tried that, but if you can print-screen a video and save the image in eg.paint and bring it back without any 3rd-party application after the video is closed, then overlay is probably off

I took a picture yesterday, but I can no longer watch it, the image (screenshot from the film) is just black.

I have tried: divx, media player classic, vlc player.
I have noticed that the quality is ok when bright colours are shown or when the camera zooms out. As soon as it gets dark in a movie (black is fine, but grey is terrible), then it gets blurry and pixelated. I wanted to watch Cloverfield, but it looks like crap. Some colours look a bit greenish or blueish too. Is my graphics card FUBAR?

    Video overlay/acceleration is enabled.

Is your screen always grainy? If it, that's a definite issue with the 15" screen (WSXGA+?). I called dell and got them to send me a replacemeng LG screen as opposed to w/e brand is grainy. Search for 'Dell grainy screen.'

I have an LG screen. Grainyness shouldn't cause this though.
