    Playing AVI file on tv with laptop

    I have a new dell insp. 1525 with vista home prem.
    I am trying to watch a movie that is avi file on my tv through my laptop a s-video cable and rca jacks for sound. using vlc player i guess older version. but when i do it flips to basic version and and i can see the computer sceen on the tv but the movie just shows a black screenwhere the movie is suposed to be.
    windows mediea won't play avi or i can't get it to work. how can i get it to work. I know a little about computers but not much.

    yes when I change the setting to view both screens it shows and plays fine on the laptop.
