Try VMWare Player, it's much better IMO.

Post the exact text you are seeing. I have been using Virtual PC everyday for almost two years. Spell out what you have done so far.

I was referring to VMWare, which is not free, correct? Or at least it wasn't last time I tried it, but that was before finding VirtualBox, so it was some time ago.

Actually, I think there IS a free version of VMWare too. But I am not certain of that.

When you start the virtual machine in Virtual PC 2007, select the CD menu and then:

If you have an ISO file with the operating system install...
Choose "Capture ISO Image..." and locate where you have the ISO file. Then restart the virtual machine and the operating system installation process should kick in. After the installation, remember to detach the ISO image file so it doesn't attempt to install it again on a restart.

If you have a CD/DVD with the operating system install...
Choose "Use Physical Drive...". Then restart the virtual machine and the operating system installation process should kick in. After the installation completes, remember to remove the CD/DVD so it doesn't try to install again.

Which operating system do you want to try out by the way?

OK, when you run virtual pc you must start the virtual machine.

once the virtual machine starts it should be in menu ON THE VIRTUAL MACHINE. theres a cd icon or you can use the file menus on the top of the machine.

from there you select iso, or disc. once you do this, restart the virtual machine itself. from there, let the disc or iso start up just the way you would installing a real os on a real pc.

From there, install the os on the virtual machine. that should get you going. once the OS install completes, youll be able to just start up and run the OS from virtual pc.

you are correct in that there is a vmware app that is free: vmware server, which I have used quite often and works well with XP and Vista. It offers more support for a variety of guest OS's including linux, unlike what microsoft's virtual pc supports.

I just found that VMWare is offering also for free their ESXi HyperVisor system, which gives better performance for running several virtual machines on the same machine. I just downloaded it to see what it's all about.

You need an ISO to load, Virtual PC does not come with a preloaded OS.

If you don't have anything laying around, your best bet is to use the Windows 7 Release Candidate or Beta, that runs well in Virtual PC 2007.

Once you have the guest OS installed do NOT forget to install the Virtual Machine Additions. This is a VERY important step. These are necessary to implement the linkage between the hardware abstraction layers of the guest and host OS. In other words it speeds things up and allows the guest OS to access the network connections of the host OS.

Agreed! mouse will float freely back and forth, copy to and from clipboard, usb and networking support, etc.

The trick is, to click on install in the file menu, then you have to mount the iso for it, from the file menu on the virtual pc, and then you have to go into my computer on the virtual pc if its xp, or computer if its vista, and actually run the disc from there. the setup files are on the iso you mount, and it gets mounted in my computer on the virtual os.

From there, its just like running an install from a cd.

Once youve got the guest additions/ virtual machine additions/etc installed, you are good to go.
