from what i have read my problem is windows 7 related, every now and then my compaq cq70 laptop does not charge the battery, if i remove the battery and push it back in this starts the charging. Im hoping someone can give me a permanent fix for this problem.

    Any suggestions folks?

everything up to date? bios, drivers, etc? surely a hw specific problem, not a win7 problem.

yeah everything is up to date, i just recently done a fresh windows 7 install too, it done it before and it still does it. i thought it would be a hardware problem too but after googling it, it seems to be a windows 7 problem.

well, in my case i had two types of hw problems: one: dying battery resulted in non-charging from time to time. the other: power supply wrong (different power supply for different devices, but still working to at least power the device).

if it would be an OS problem, it would be a common problem to multiple 100 million devices. it isn't, hence it's not an os problem.

then i'd point my fingers towards the battery, blaming it. i'm not sure, but it would be my main focus. i have one dead battery that behaves by now always like that: it gets detected by the system, but it doesn't charge.

hi thanks, i installed battery care, it reports the same as windows ie 87% and 87%, when i plug in the mains, windows says plugged in not charging, battery care reports 'full charge'.

what laptop have you got. im no expert but its not advised to use other batterys that could be slightly different power ratio.
the other option i was going to suggest was to remove the cmos battery for a minute if you can manage to find it inside so it will reset the memory.

i have a Compaq Presario CQ70-211EM, the battery i bought is meant for my laptop but whether thats the cause or not who knows.

the cmos battery looks as if its in where the hard drive is, ill remove it and refit it and see if it makes any difference. cheers

i have removed the cmos battery and refitted it, i started the laptop without the power supply, plugged in the power supply and it started charging right away, some times it did not do this, ill now need to monitor over the next few days to see if its and better. Ill update you either way .

this worked flawlessly till last night, i let the battery run dead whilst the laptop was on, after that it was back to the way it was before. Its not as bad but it does that and does it more often.

I had a Vista lappy that wouldn't charge the battery. I had two batteries that wouldn't charge through the laptop. They charged with other laptops. I tried other chargers with my laptop and they still wouldn't charge. It sort of led up to this though, because it would sometimes charge and eventually it just completely stopped charging. I read somewhere it was a mobo issue but I'm not completely sure. Maybe it's a problem similar to mine.

cheers for the reply, it could be the same problem although i have not tried other batteries and other charger, from the different tests you have done it does sound kinda like a motherboard issue.

if i reset mine by removing the battery or removing the bios battery oit seems to work fine to start with then it goes back to the way it was, if i leave it longer it ends up not charging at all, just like you experienced.

just a guess but im wondering if the cmos battery is holding its charge. so when you remove it and replace it it works for a while but after a short time it looses its memory again.

sorry just realized i had a reply, i dont know about your suggestion as i dont know how a battery memory works.

im not getting some strange behaviour since i tried removing the cmos battery. Sometimes it gets to say 92% and thinks its fully charged, sometimes 88%, sometimes 99%, the other day about 30%, i need to pop out the battery whilist its plugged in and pop it back in and it changes again but its yet to get to 100%.

does anyone think that the bios battery could be causing this problem. why is it disconnecting the bios battery allows my main battery to charge again.??
