A poll to gauge the NBR reaction to the free Windows 10 upgrade. Open for 1 month so it's soon-after-upgrade and not indefinite.

Just installed it a few minutes ago. Really too soon to tell but so far, so good. New IE for W10 too.

Vote early, vote often. I'm American so what can I say?

I have not upgraded. I think I'll get Windows 10 when I buy a new computer but I'll keep 7 and 8.1 on my older laptops until they are no longer supported.

I have to, as of now, say Hell No! I am giving it some time but its days are numbered unless M$ comes out and commits to fixing it properly. People using their PC's for Photo/Video productivity will get their workflow interrupted. My guess is there are other workflow issues as well interrupted but I am not familiar with those.

Edge may be fine on a phone but for a wide screen tablet or PC it is simply put plain junk. Metro apps lack allot of functionality compared to Android apps. Every time I turn around I am finding some other issue.

The worst part is I can not count on M$ fixing these issues. I can't even count on them thinking it is an issue as they may be looking at it as their idea of improved functionality. Another question is will new PC's, and/or installations, have the legacy apps and if so then how long will M$ keep and support those? Will M$ ever realize that drivers need to be done by the OEM's not controlled by them? Just too many problems and questions as of right now!

Will probably give it a try tonight or later this week, on a secondary SSD, and just dual boot.

When I first installed it, I love it! The problem is, within 3 days, the amount of quirks, lack of control, automatic driver updates, basic OS functionality not working, one after the other just kept pushing me over the edge until I finally got fed up and formatted....

    Good luck

Oh, I do not want to hear I was against it since day one, every PC of mine is 100% Windows 10 right now. I am not touching Linux etc.. I am trying to give it every chance, and I was hopeful at first, but I feel like it just keeps kicking me in the groin every chance it gets.

Edit; If I pay money for example Adobe CC I want it to be able to import, browse edit and do all household chores not have some POS metro app try and take over! I have canon utilities for a reason for my expensive Canon equipment, will M$ refund me my money for it ? M$ WAKE UP!

I really like it, in both the tablet context and the desktop context (and the fact that a single OS can do well in both contexts is great). It's my favorite version of Windows to date, by a country mile.

It seems dramatically faster on my hardware. I agree with others, wish there was a way of turning *all* of the metro stuff off and essentially being left with a fancy Windows 7.

Works for me - wish the settings were all in one place and the icons looked better but apart from that it's fine. Barely use Metro and haven't tried Cortana so I'm not making the most of it really,

Do not want to turn of metro, just get rid of things that block productivity. The new concern over M$ sense just sharing your wifi passwords to people in contacts is a real issue too. Even if I turn it off here I have to be careful in the future who I give it too as they may not have disabled it.

Edit; FYI, I told the system I did not want sense sharing my contacts as it was installed, I went to settings and it was ON. Grrrrrrrrrr..................

Now this means I can't leave my PC even as W10 as it could be a security risk.

At this point it is like a train wreck, you want to look away but you can't. Essentially I am only staying, for now, too see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Ended all SSID's with "_optout" including guest networks and place the PC on a guest network.

yes and no, I like some of the fix,
but man with all those options gone, and the need to regedit this, gpedit that, cmd everything to get the windows I want....
not cool ~ essentially you gonna need to root your computer.

On tablet, big no no, where is my charm bar brightness slider MS, WHERE? WHERE da heck did it go. .....................................................

Not sure about the charm bar brightness slider (I didn't use it), but I noticed looking around yesterday that there is a brightness control in the notifications area. Single clicking increases brightness in 25% jumps (inferior to a slider), but might fit the bill.

Still digging in a bit with the upgrade, but it feels like a work-in-progress. For example, I'm still working between two control panels, but more things have migrated over. In time I suppose I'll get used to what is where again. It does seem as though you do have to dig around with manual editing in more places, although I suspect somebody will release a tweak tool before too long.

I do like the start menu over the start screen in windows 8, so I might even start to use it a bit more. Life in windows 8 has been mostly pinned taskbar items and using win key + typing to launch anything else. I generally got used to not using the start menu. While the start menu is better than windows 8, I think I'd be disappointed if I were coming straight from windows 7.

Cortana not working with your region set to Canada was surprising. I'm glad everyone here from the US can still read my posts, given that Microsoft now has led me to believe that our languages are quite different. :D

Thanks for the heads up regarding the wifi sharing. I opted out of that as well, so I'll be sure to check the setting when I get home (if I can find it!).

Windows 10 is great for my other PC's & my family's, not so much for my Y50. For some reason games are dropping to the single digits, which causes the GTX's performance to be significantly lower than the same 4600 HD (which I ended up using for games) that's inside. As soon as I reverted to Win8.1 gaming performance was returned and I no longer need to rely on the 4600 for games.

I think I'll continue to keep Win10 on my Surface Pro 3 since it has been relatively bug free for 10166 -10240. MS, Nvidia, and maybe AMD all have a lot of things to repair in the coming months. This was my 1st time upgrading to a new OS on (or before release) and I've been left with mixed feelings.

Well I have had it on my new Toughbook 53 since it first come out last year and I downloaded the newer version a few weeks ago and well I still don't like it. Why...I hate looking at a screen with all these square boxes on it. It kinda takes me back to a stupid phone that looked the same. It was a big flop around here. You think they would learn
W7 works great for me. If I click here or go there I know where I am going / looking for. In W10 I am still lost after all these months...reminds me of Lynx OS...l feel kinda bad now insulting Lynx like that.

Windows Phone will still have the boxes, which is might have been the mobile OS you used. This is just the Metro or Modern UI look.

I think that's a good way to put it. Very similar to Win8.x, only in that case, the crash was hard and immediate, with WinX it seems more like a train wreck in slow motion. Much more entertaining, actually...

Why that Sinofsky-invented disease is allowed to continue to infect Windows is beyond me. Windows Phone, where it at least made a minimal amount of sense, is dead as a doornail, and everybody knows it. All that's missing is the official obituary. So why hang on to those utterly useless tiles?

What I have with Win7 and I'm assuming is possible with Win10 is I have "Balanced" and "High Performance" on hotkey (Ctrl+Alt+1 for HP and Ctrl+Alt+2 for Balanced).

Alternatively, you can create desktop shortcuts for the power plans. You need to do this for the hotkeys anyway but I hide all of my desktop icons as it's cleaner. I have most of my regularly accessed programs and games on hotkey. It's way faster.

I only am 10 or so hours in on it yet, so can't vote, but it is only loaded on one of my 5 machines and that is the one that is used close to not at all, so it has nothing important on it. I am playing with it throughout the day (love being retired) but so far there are far too many unknowns to actually put it on a machine that has important uses. Maybe I value it about as much as my iPad which I use very seldom. More like a curiosity rather than a real tool.

It has its own issues but the native virtual desktops function by itself is more than enough for me to keep using it. Also DX12 when it comes.

I reverted back to 7 ultimate.

I will check what is going to happend on the next few month with the windows 10 upgrade and see if they can make it beareable under the update and privacy point of view.

It has potencial, but it is not ready yet for daily driver OS. imho.

I was all in on Win X until I began to read more and more negatives about the OS. I only have it installed on my ThinkPad T60 and that's it. I have never had a particular version of Windows where I felt it's better to stay on the older release until Windows X. Even Windows Vista there were somethings I liked about it until Windows 7 was released.

I honestly can't say the same for Windows 10. I actually now prefer Windows 8.1 in all it's warts and imperfections. For me what put it over the top were the privacy issues, mandated updates (even if you disable or defer you get them), mandatory drivers (that's the most flagrant as I have several gaming rigs I built). I decide which and what video drivers they get, not MS.

The privacy issue is the big one for me. It's like Microsoft doubled down after the whistle was blown and now they can't get enough data on people.
And most people still don't care... Sad.

I voted 'Yes', I do actually like the Windows 10 interface, and I find it a snappy OS. The privacy concerns don't bother me much, I really don't think anything negative is going to happen to me as a result of Microsoft collecting more data about me (which they didn't as much in their previous OS's). I think the privacy issues have been blown out of proportion. Am I happy that they're collecting more info about me - not really, and I don't think it's necessary, but for me it's not a massive negative.

The problem does not lie in collecting information it is where it is being collected from. There are certain areas where there is still a right to privacy. You are signing those areas away, not a good thing. Even if they do not collect the data by your tweaks you have signed away the right to it with the EULA so they have the rights to come in and collect it by any means, nefarious or otherwise.

Albeit a bit extreme it is tantamount to signing a power of attorney where the right to privacy exists on your computer and local files. That and they are only held to the lowest of standards as a "good faith belief". IMHO you have to be insane to agree to that.

I won't pretend privacy isn't a big concern because it definitely is, but I don't feel like any of the privacy changes made in Windows 10 will have a meaningful impact on anyones life.

In this country many have fought and died to give you these rights and protections. Everyone now just wants to sign them away. That is just so wrong on so many levels.

Edit; So on the opposite end to me M$ is asking us to disrespect every veteran who ever fought a war to protect the Constitution and its rights just to play with their new toy.

It's not just this country. The creators of Magna Carta - which turned a thousand years old a couple of months ago - must be rolling in their graves.

It most certainly is. First Amendment is next to worthless if you take away the Fourth, which is where we've been *de facto* heading for over a decade now.

It was okay, I had to fix the upgrade though to windows 10.

    Cheers
    3Fees :)

A little off the topic, yesterday I was at walmart and came back to the car and looked back to the parking lot and seen something in the road, I looked again and seen it was a wallet and cash was laying on it, I walked over and picked it and started to walk back into the store, I mentioned this to a lady putting groceries in the car and told her and that i was returning it to walmart,, she said I will have good karma for that... [IMG]

I returned it complete to customer service with all the cash, I seen 20, 5 and other bills, I did not count it, customer service found his business card and called him right then, driver license, credit cards ect in wallet.

My philosophy on this is, I did not lose anything so returning it all to the person that lost it is the best way to go.

    Cheers

Would have voted don't like Win10, for many reasons. The only thing I did like, was the fact it ran my old DOS programs in DOSbox, and my old Windows programs. In fact, the only way I could customize the desktop fonts was to use Win98's Plus! program (which works fine in XP and prior, as you might know). I created the font faces and types I wanted in one of my XP machines, then saved the theme in Plus! Then installed Plus! by simply copying the folder into Win10's Program Filex x86, then simply installed the font face and size by double-clicking on THEMES.exe and then on the theme I created. It only works for the font face and size, and of course that font has to be on the machine when invoked.

(Works in Linux, too, right-click on the Wine enabler, double click on THEMES.exe no matter where that program is located.)

Everything else about Win10 I find annoying, dislike, or loathe. The EULA makes it downright unsafe to use, unless you like being sued to death. My other post today in Notebook Review forum will have the EULA details, so just search on my name and my posts, if interested (I don't post much in here, didn't know this forum covered Win10, until today).
