    I'm curious what the breakdown for admin account and UAC usage is at NBR. Do you like to be the root and have the power, privileges, and responsibilities that come with that, or do you prefer the security of a regular user account? Similarly, do you find UAC to be more helpful or annoying?

    Vote based on the computer you use most for personal use.

    I run a regular user account with UAC enabled, i also have the admin account that i use when i need to mess with the laptop, but most of the time i run a user account. UAC will prompt you for the admin password on a user account anyways if you need to get something done quickly.

    Also, my office is shared with other post-grad students and is usually unlocked as well so with a standard user, even if i forget to lock windows when i go somewhere else, there's no messing with the computer without the admin password. Also prankster friend proof to a certain extent.

    this is one of my many pet peeves with Win7, the intial user created after fresh install is admin, this is absurd IMO. If you ask again in a month I would take the final option, I am really liking Linux (Ubuntu 12.04), my D610 loads web pages as fast as 7 on my Asus.

    Regular user account is an admin account in Windows. I use that with UAC turned off in Windows 7.

    it's not absurd but very much the right thing to do. linux asking you for the root password is a less secure default (for an ordinary pc user, not a tech geek).

    for people not wanting to do research: don't train ordinary people into having to enter their password all the time for "sytem tasks". they will enter it, then, for viruses etc, too.

    and someone on each pc has to be admin. by default, the one who owns the hw, too.

    Admin Account with UAC disabled, I tend to be careful and had no problems for years. :) If I was want to try out some new software I do it under my virtual machines first and test it out there so if something goes wrong or anything dodgy pops up along I just revert to my previous clean snapshot within the VM environment and clear it out. If all is fine then I give it the all clear to be on my main OS.

    Regular user with UAC on 7 here.

    Even with Vista UAC wasn't too bad.

    Good point. But it's common knowledge that admin is default.

    That is a good one. It'd get annoying to watch it too often, with all the cancel or allow questions from the security guard, but it's great as long as you watch it in moderation!

    Admin account with UAC off on both of my computers, because I don't feel like being bothered with it and I know what I'm doing, haven't had any issues in years.
