Poor Notebook Battery Life? Cause... Microsoft Redistributable C++?

Over the last 4-5 months I have been receiving complaints about battery life in laptops. Especially since I review laptops, my findings of battery life lately have been different from what the user ends up with. I'm talking about laptops with 5-7 hours run time for me end up with 2-3 for the consumer.

Here's what I know and what I think I know so far.

1) I know I always test battery life early on when reviewing a laptop. I do this before I start to install the games and other various softwares that I use to bench/test the machine.

2) I know that I recently have received a few emails from people in search of a solution, and two of these emails included their fix. Their solution was to remove the "Microsoft Redistributable C++" from their machine and everything was reporting and working as described in my review.

3) My testing so far has been over three months long and currently I have two laptops with similar enough specs and battery life (Aero 15 and MAG-15). I have wiped both several times for testing and I'm at the point now where everything I do on my end has ZERO negative impact to the battery life until I install Battlefield 5 which includes MS C++. However, at the time of this post I do NOT have BFV installed on either machine but I do have Battlefield 3 installed on the Aero 15 along with its C++. This version does NOT impact the battery life as i'm getting my regular 5-7 hours.

I realize this is not scientific at all and I do not have the time to dedicate serious time to a solution. I just listen when spoken to and test when I can.

I would really like to get down to the bottom of this!

PS: I am abundantly aware that MSI AB running in the background pings the dGPU negatively impacting battery life. There's many things that can and will cause huge variance on your battery run time spite 10 of us using the same spec laptop.

 

it's software/services related. the more you install the lesser the battery life. i was getting 4 hours without system tweaks basically doing nothing, and after unclewebb and mr fox helped me tweak im getting 15 hours moderate usage...

 

That’s doesn’t seem to be the case on my end. I run a lean machine with the ONLY thing different right now is that I’m without BFV. Everything else is reinstalled.

 

thats really weird...perhaps people are taxing their systems alot and hence the lower battery life...When I use my yoga 920 heavily i get about 5 hours and when im watching a movie and its almost idling I get about 15 hours its a pretty large gap...if your getting 7 hours and they are getting 2 perhaps you can tell them the obvious, like lower screen brightness and expecct lower battery life if your downloading files and or using intensive applications. not sure I really wish I could help you out and PS Your channel is wicked good, in depth and helpful.
