Do you use a router to go online? If you do you are pretty safe.
If you dont have a router then you need a firewall on your computer.

The little box might be a router with modem or only a modem. It might be possible to hack you with the IP. It is not easy but Windows XP still has some holes. Same for Vista. If you install a personal firewall it would be better.

    Have a look at Zonealarm.

Sometimes yes. Depends on your provider. Some providers give you the same IP everytime you dial in. With others you get a new IP after every dial in.

Try restarting your router and see if it changes. If it doesnt turn of your modem/router for 10-20 minutes and then try again. Might change it. If still no change you need to call your provider to change it.

most internet providers provide their clients with temporary ip addresses, so they can allocated these addresses to other customers when the first ones are not connected(online). Beside, internet provides have maitenance routines which change their clients ip addresses in a regular base (i.e. once a month). I've been told by an expert in networking that this won't work if your computer is always connected.

To get your ip changed you could simply disconnect your computer for a while than connect again. You could also reset you connection using "ipconfig /release" followed by "ipconfig /renew" in the dos prompt.

If non of these work you could always contact your internet provider and ask them to change you IP address.

He's going to "hack" you with your IP address? Without knowing anything about your computer and your operating system?

    ...

Lol! :D :D :D    He's just shooting his mouth off. I highly doubt he even knows how to conduct a port scan. Just put up Windows Firewall and you're fine. It will protect against inbound attacks. It will not protect against user stupidity though, so don't download an executable (.exe file) from him (or anyone else) and expect any protection.

I would not recommend downloading third party software firewalls, especially the free ones from Zone Alarm (yuck) as they're more trouble than they're worth in the end.

Yes, it is probably just an empty threat. However, I would not discount the real possibility that there is a real threat there. The fact that the guy does not know which OS to target is of little relief. As the CERT says:

They are talking about unprotected computers that are just connected to the network. Those are cases where nobody has made any specific threat or figured the OS ahead of time.

Edit: Necss, I think you should read the page I link to above. It contains a lot of good information by experts.

Technically, yes, all you need to hack a computer is its ip address. Of course, it's virtually impossible to do unless you have some more information (which OS you're running, maybe the hardware configuration and so on)

But if he was going to hack you, why would he tell you in advance?

Well, since getting Zonealarm involves money anyway (the free version just sucks..you might as well stick with Windows firewall), you might consider saving up a bit more and getting a router. The built-in hardware firewall would be much a better investment - and there are all sorts of advantages to having one in the long run that's not necessarily isolated to this single incident.

    Two words: "script kiddies".

It's amusing, how many people will talk so big. I love giving out my IP to those wankers and watching them try basic password scripts on my SSH server, or even better, IIS exploits on my Apache server. They don't even do an nmap scan first to figure out what's open and what's exploitable or anything... they just start up their canned crap they downloaded from some seedy corner of the net (and got themselves infected with 20 viruses while doing so) and then put in the IP address and never really know what's going on.

Unless you have a dedicated IP from your provider you will have your IP address determined via the DHCP server, and these ip addresses typically expire after a few days. A router allows you to change your own address as you wish, but your router is still assigned an IP from the DHCP server. Still, it is good protection.

I would firstly report this person to a moderator at the other forum. This is unacceptable behaviour on any respectful forum. Secondly I would install a firewall too. It's probably a bluff, most of these "haxors" are nothing more than big mouthed brats, but it pays to take it seriously. If the guy keeps harassing you, report it to your internet provider and possibly the police if the threats become more serious.

    Best of luck.

My IP changed like every 2 weeks or so with Verizon and my machine never goes off. Its a normal thing to change IP's on any residential isp service, usually you have to pay extra to get a static ip (one that wont change)

There are lots of ways to protect your IP as mentioned above, but I wouldnt be too worried about this guy harrasing you, real hackers dont advertise, its probably some script kiddy.
