Are there any small notebook freeware applications that you consider essential?

    Firefox
    Thunderbird
    Hijackthis
    Bazooka Adware and Spyware Scanner
    LeechGet 1450
    mp3ext

But I was more going on the lines of notebook specific freeware. Like temperature monitors.

I couldn't find an original recent link (their website doesn't list it AFAIK). I posted the .zipped installer here for you:

    http://homepage.mac.com/brucemillerphoto

My DKLite version only shows an upgrade nag screen when launched each time, nothing obtrusive.

I like these sort of threads. I always find something new. Thanks. Here are my additions:

    Opera
    Proxomitron (http://www.proxomitron.info/)
Mike Lin's StartUp Control Panel and StartUp Monitor (http://www.mlin.net/)
    Adobe Reader Speedup (http://www.tnk-bootblock.co.uk/prods/misc/index.php)
    XP Anti-Spy (http://www.xp-antispy.org/)
    PDF Creator (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/)
    Network Stumbler (http://www.netstumbler.com/)
    Airsnare (http://home.comcast.net/~jay.deboer/airsnare/)

The latter two are must haves if you have a home wireless network. They will help you check your security and see who else in your neighborhood may be interfering on your channel. Airsnare will even let you send a popup message to somebody who may be on your network! Of course, there are more insidious uses for these programs as well.

Proxomitron is no longer being developed but there is quite a community of people that support it still. One thing to do is to find one of the many forums and download somebody's "hosts" file to speed up blocking of ads. You could also try:

    https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

    http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/

    Hope this helps!

ahh battery doubbler, it works best if you have an ACPI battery, i find it alittle helpful since my battery is not, if it is however you can suck up to 8 hours of life out of a 4 hour battery (cool hunh) its from dashund software.

NOTE: dashund is not spelt right, as most of you know i will be notebookless until monday so as soon as i figure out how to spell it i will post here again with a link.

    Here are Frequently Asked Questions:

    http://www.dachshundsoftware.com/bdoubler/bfaq.html

Through searching for it I found more Serial Codes/Cracks than actual vendors for it. It appears that it hasn't been updated in 3 years....Does it still work for XP?

    Firefox
    Ad Aware SE Personal
    iTunes
    Microsoft Works
    Photoshop CS
    MSN Messenger
    Trillian
    ImTOO DVD Ripper

I love ImTOO DVD Ripper. Instead of hauling a ton of DVDs with you, you can copy them to your harddrive in AVI format. Instead of being nearly 5 gigabytes, you can have the whole movie in about 1.5 gigs. The quality is great and it's very good software. I think it's free, I can't remember. I either have a free version or it was only a trial.

MSN Messenger is great for communication. It's the best messenger out there. Trillian is great if you use more than one client, but I usualyl stick with only MSN.

Photoshop CS: the best image editing program out there. At least get the free trial.

iTunes: the best media player and the best music store all in one.

AdAware SE: the best solution to adaware, and it's free!

Firefox: the best web browser available.

    ---

I checked out that battery life doubler and a few of the other programs that run together and I am quite pleased. I haven't done much away from the outlet yet, but I did notice my battery life almost at 6 hours. I am particulary fond of Anti-Crash, as it included Mem Doubler which does a decent job (better than nothing) at freeing up some memory.

I also dig that LeechGet. Thanks for the suggestion. I've been using Download Mage, which I do like a lot, but it never included support (or I just never got a plugin) for Mozilla, which led me to use the download manager built into Firefox.

How could I forget one of the most impressive peices of free software: Open Office. Those unwilling to pay for MS Office should really consider this suite. Version 1.1 is the current revision but 2.0 is coming and is supposed to be even better, especially in the Word to OpenOffice conversion filters.

Check it out at www.openoffice.org .

I unplugged my i9200 earlier today and, to my surprise, saw that the battery meter estimated it to last 7 hours and 30 minutes. It went down after I started doing more stuff, but when it went idle for a while, it would start to rise again. It's pretty nifty.

I just downloaded that Image Resizer which is one of the Powertoys for Windows XP. It's very nifty. No longer do I have to open Photoshop to do a simple resizing. I recommend it.

1.5GB for 1 dvd? thats a little too much, reencode the DVD to XVID and you get it to 700MB = 1CD-R

microsoft works is useless, it cant even open some MS word/excel files lol, you dont need msn messenger if you have trillian, and you lose half the functionality if you use trillian so if you have an MSN account only i recommend msn 7 + mess.be to remove anoying garbage in the msn program

currently on my quick launch i have

    Calculator
    Character map
    IE 6
    Firefox
    Opera
    Outlook 2003
    Outlook Express (for news groups)
    Word 2003
    Excel 2003
    Visio pro 2003
ACDSEE 7 (fastest picture program viewer/editor avalible)
    Foto canvas (part of acdsee)
    Power DVD 6
    WMP10
    Winamp
Quicktime (deleted icon cuz quicktime blows for anything but since its required to play mov files i have to have it)
    DVD Decrypter
    VOB Blanker
    DVD Shrink
    Nero
Clone CD 4.2.0.2 (i think this is ilegal since it works so good)
Easy CDDA Extractor 6? 7? cant remember, one of thebest audio rippers out there
Registry Mechanic 4.0 (great program, needed for both desktops and laptop)
    MSN 7 Hacked
Process Viewer (more powerful than task manager, also useful if task manager is disabled by spyware/virus/trojan/etc)
Simple File Shredder (free, files deleted by this are UNRECOVERABLE!)
    Spyware blaster
Spysweeper (IS the best antispyware software)
VNC to remote control my desktop
Sonic Stage 2.3(required by Net MD players, this software is a peice of crap but i need it for my md player)

    -->Asus M6BNe | Pentium M 1.6GHz Dothan | 1024MB PC2700 Micron Ram | Radeon 9700 Pro 64MB | 80GB Samsung 5400 RPM 8MB Cache | Gigabit LAN | CDRW + DVD Combo |

I got that Star Downloader but it didn't download as fast for me. I'm on a very poor DSL connection. I'll have to give it a try next time I'm at my sister's apartment. She's got cable.

I can't quite figure out the integration with Firefox. I downloaded the extension but I don't know how to get the file to downloaded with Star Downloader instead of the default download manager.

That's a cool piece of software to have. Thanks for the recomendation.

MP3-Library is an awesome tool for editing ID3 tags of MP3s. I am reformatting my MP3 player soon, once I edit all of the tags. I am getting annoyed by the weird file names, it's hard to navigate. If you are in need of an ID3 tag editor, I recommend MP3-Library.

I love SharpDeveloper! Dev-C++ and SharpDevelop are all I use for programming, though I'm just getting started. I've got Visual Basic .NET 2003 or whatever it is that Microsoft was giving away to people who watched and rated five movies.

My advice is based on personal experience. Effectiveness will vary.

A few months ago Microsoft had this promotion going on. If you watched, rated, and commented on 5 movies about Visual Basic.NET, they'd send you VB.NET 2003 for free.

I did it, and sure enough, I got my free software. I installed it on my laptop, but I lost it when I reformatted the drive. I haven't reinstalled it because I use SharpDevelop more now. I might install it again later, but I don't feel like wasting the time when I don't need it.
