Hey I remember this thread when it was hot: I did 23.368 with my old VAIO Intel T7500 & WD Scorpio Blue 500Gb, and I just disabled RMClock (undervolting) from startup, did not change anything else. I tested the Vaio Z and I got 46.035 on Stamina and 57.002 on Speed Mode with P9600 & Toshiba 5400rpm, but battery time kicks any other laptop off the board. 40s and 50s is embarassing, I know.

wow so how can I make mine go to 8 seconds aswell?
-
Clean Install/Optimize/Shut Down all services and Start ups
-
-
ok i tried what you said and disabled all services and start ups and I got the blue screen of death, so then I had to go to safe mode and turn them back on, so turning off all services and start ups does not help
-
I had Windows 7 since January 1st and for quite awhile, it had fast startup and shutdown. I didn't count exactly how long but it sure shut down in 5 seconds or less. It started in 20 seconds or so with fingerprint.
In recent months, I noticed degression on shut down time. Startup time has gotten slower but it's still usable. However, it takes close to 30 seconds to shut down.
I edited registry editor to shorten shut down time and haven't touched much of the Services/msconfig set up since the time I initially tweaked them in January. Well, I did disable some services.
Is there any cure to this? Could I have disabled a service that enhance shut down time by any chance?
Because it seems like Windows can't quit some programs automatically when I shut down (a music program and Windows 7 sticky notes). I have to manually quit them.
It seems like it lag from time to time too which haven't happened to me. And I had 'blue screen' once last month. I never had blue screen for about 4 years (including Vista days), so I'm wondering if hardware is corrupted. It works fine now though. I haven't had another blue screen since then. -
I need to get a new HDD or SSD lol being last sucks. Hopefully, in the next two weeks I'll do a clean install and see if I can improve anything.
-
-
Maybe if I find the time when I get back from my m/c trip down through the US. I will be assembling my new system then and just may do both....one for the laptop and one for the desktop. I believe I may have a new C300 to play with then as well.
No reason to doubt as I would never risk my rep on lying about anything that I post. You will see Phils score right behind mine with an even lesser processor. The initial boot has extremely little to do with the processor...I will show that when I test with the Rampage III/i7-930/6Gb ra, in a few weeks. -
No betting please. Afaik it's against the rules.
-
Or you just need the time to wipe everything off and do a minimal fresh install??? -

Ok Guys...did it! Yalcin I'm just going to let you eat your words and thank you. Never...ever...ever...ever... have I ever posted a boot time in the 7 second mark and, if you would believe it, I couldn't get above the 7 second mark while doing up the fun little video which I will link as soon as Youtube finishes downloading.
Below u will see some scores...as you will see in the video although just a bit blurred!
Now.... The ONLY thing I did was a fresh install, turned off all services and then startups...thats it. The SSD is the OWC Extreme Pro and lets get that time up there Phil!!!!

WOW Les... very nice!!!
Crazy video btw, good job!!! -
Had a blast doing the video even if it is a bit blurry. Hey, that must be me somehow altering the scores do you think? -
Indeed, that means that I have to prepare my R2 for a new combat
-
Crazy video...
But I gotta ask, is Windows useable for anything with all its services turned off ? Is the point of this little competition just a race against the boot time utility or is it to get Windows up and running as fast as possible ?
Don't want to spoil the party or anything, I just can't see the use of a super fast boot time if it doesn't get me anywhere. -
There are tweaks involved that are not only service or start up programs disabling. You can also gain some knowledge from the whole experience which is worth more than the first position on this list. -
Ok guys let's get this thread on topic again.
For the people that don't understand the purpose of comparing boottimes booting with tweaks: I can understand you don't understand it. But this is what happened here in this thread and it's the way we do it now.
From now on no more discussion about the purpose please. If you want to start a thread "Post Windows 7 Boot Time without tweaks", go ahead.
All we want to see here from now on is results. And more videos would be nice.
Great video Les. -

Wow.... I have a little fun with a video and it draws this? Its not I that is taking this too seriously.
Now lets pull this back on topic shall we.
For those who arent aware, I have been playing with ssds and doing reviews since 07. Matter of fact...the first ssd review on the internet was done here at NBR by yours truly. It has been that long that I have also said that ones boot time can be an excellent indicator of system health. Software manufacturers like nothing more than to have their programs install small 'utilities if you will' that start each and every time you start your computer. Most of the time these are unnecessary and all of the time these end up slowing your start times and general system operation down.
To those new here, my start time normally with all services and startups is about 14 seconds tops. I havent fine tuned any services but I have kept the startups to a minimum. I have also been careful to choose my virus program as some add alot of time to your boot and also have shut down pretty much all of the automatic update programs....
Ok so... we might be able to see that it is possible that our boot time can be a reflection of our general system performance and health.
Lets take it one step further shall we? In testing ssds, it is hard to find a way to test different ssds and to keep it absolutely the same for each. If I were to take 2 systems and simply run boot timer, it wouldn't be a fair assessment because the chances of the two OS's being exact is one in a million. The ONLY way to truly determine the boot time for a ssd (something testers have been doing for years) is to make sure that there is an EXACT criteria to allow both to be tested under the same variables. This method is exactly that and serves that purpose.
Now...in real life can this help us? Absolutely! Anyone with a boot time of over 15-20 seconds....much less 40 seconds plus....has to wonder why they have time for a coffee during their system boot. It takes away of our enjoyment of the system.
Yalcin19... You give me much more credit than I am capable of. Analyse raw video? Man...that is raw video. It was taken with my sons little Samsung handheld and put on Youtube not 5 minutes before I posted it. Yes its blurry but its the best I could do. I honestly dont know how to trim video at the beginning and end much less to alter it in any way. Better yet I have to give you credit because I certainly dont know how to manipulate the boot timer to give fake times. You are a bit of an instigator that you would focus on me rather than Phil with a lesser processor and almost identical speed...but then you learned the wrath of messing with a Mod previously haven't you?
The part that absolutely mystifies me is you have taken ill against one of the first people to help you when u came to NBR and wanted to learn about ssds. I jumped in and took the time to write out a detailed response to your question and then u thanked me for it if I recall correctly. I gueess I have to be sorry for you if thats the kind of person you want to portray yourself as.
This thread is a bit reminiscent of the stand we had to take when myself, Trebuin and a few others were trying to sell the consumer...and manufacturers...on 64Bit. It was an impossible sell where so many said that manufacturers just wouldn't show their support with 64 bit programs. And then there was the ssd as well. I remember when readers wrote in saying this is terrible technology and it wouldn't last. There will always be those that follow the flock over the cliff and those that will stand up for their values. People still take the time to tell me how nuts I am to tell people to shut down their pagefile. The funny thing is that those that try it seem to never go back.
And then there is System Restore. Everyone told me I was nuts to believe that Restore had anything to do with performance degradation including some great contacts that were intricately involved in the manufacturing process of ssds... The simple thing was that I wondered why, unlike everyone else including Anand it seemed, my ssds didnt suffer any noticeable form of performance degradation over time. And then I found a way to test it and started helping people with degradation and in alot of the cases it was exactly that. Today we know that System Restore allocation points can slow if not shut down TRIM in some ssds and even manufacturers such as Intel recommend to shut it down.
Guess I'm kinda proud to go against the grain and stand up for what I see as the future in OS development and ssd technology. Its kinda nice to be a game changer...
Finally...and I know this post has been very verbose....ANYONE who believes that its normal for your system to have a boot of 45 seconds or more should know why it takes so long and how to fix it. That is why we are here after all....here to help in any way I can....
And loved making that video...myself and m wife laughed our #$%%%^ off doing it.
Oh and yes 'Y', I did say that I didnt think I would find the time because I am heading out on vacation... I am also waiting for all the parts to come in to make a fantastic gaming machine and tester for ssds...my first as a matter of fact. On top of that, I have had this OWC in my system for almost a month now and have yet to get a review out on it as I promised many I would run a comparison between this and the RE version.... I did take the time to do the vid up as I thought it might benefit you so I guess, in the end, Im the sucker taking the time to try and help out a bit now aint I?
Have to leave tomorrow now because of the rain... I usually m/c through the Southern States and did 5500 miles through the South last summer... Heading to Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, PA,, through a bunch more States and then into NYC for a few days again this year... Thats why such a small and speedy laptop is so valuable to me; it can go anywhere. Did all know that most States information centers have free wifi to help travelers out?
Have a good one all... and your right CRAZY VIDEO.... still laughing my butt off...
Oh and Thomas my old friend.... We are like the old folk here and mixed way back when as well....Gimme a pm and we will try and get that system booting just a bit quicker for ya...45 seconds...wow. You know that Win7 was released don't u? -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Les, I checked your website and you have a lot of fantastic info that I have already started implementing. All this time I've been wondering if Intel Rapid Storage Technology was actually doing anything useful because I had no idea whether the TRIM was working or not and I was able to confirm that TRIM is enabled (even though my drives are in Raid0) using the very simple command you posted.
I have 2 questions for you:
(1) If you disable system restore, how do you compensate - do you backup to external drive more frequently and if you run into problems simply restore from the external backup?
(2) I have read elsewhere that it is recommended to set PreFetch and SuperFetch to boot only - you would recommend disabling them both entirely, however, correct? -
Hmmmm....
For me, I keep EVERYTHING on external drive and have a hard drive dock that fits all the drives I have laying around. In the new system I am building, I can have as many hooked up at the same time as I want...but then again...I will prob just grab a Tb sized drive. The test to see if restore is slowing your sysem is very simple.
Do a Crystal disk test in safe mode. This allows for a pure evaluation without software/OS settings affecting the test.
Shut down system restore completely and restart. If its off it will get rid of all the allocation points.
Run the Intel Optimizer if u have an Intel
Do a Crystal test in safe mode again and then compare the results. Is the first significantly diff than the second?
Prefetch and Superfetch do not serve a purpose with an SSD because the access to information is so high. To this day, I am not aware of anyone who can show a performance difference whatsoever that would give me reason to leave them on. Here is an Intel excerpt supporting some of this:
Will Superfetch be disabled on SSDs?
Yes, for most systems with SSDs.
If the system disk is an SSD, and the SSD performs adequately on random reads and doesn’t have glaring performance issues with random writes or flushes, then Superfetch, boot prefetching, application launch prefetching, ReadyBoost and ReadDrive will all be disabled.
Initially, we had configured all of these features to be off on all SSDs, but we encountered sizable performance regressions on some systems. In root causing those regressions, we found that some first generation SSDs had severe enough random write and flush problems that ultimately lead to disk reads being blocked for long periods of time. With Superfetch and other prefetching re-enabled, performance on key scenarios was markedly improved.
Now..Intel did not end up shutting it down automatically and they have come forward saying that they didn't do so with respect to older ssds and their reaction to such. They explained that they needed to ensure that their OS (Win 7) was as compatible to as much hardware as it could be.
In the end, many would simply ask why they would shut down something that isn't hurting their system? Myself, I would ask why I would allow utilities to continue running that aren;'t helping my system. For my own use, Pagefile, hibernation, Prefetch, Superfetch and indexing all seem to serve no purpose whatsoever so they are off. There may be one or two others but this is simply a quick response.
Hmmm moviemarketing eh? Can you help me produce a better vid for 'Y'? eheheh

I've done nothing special here, other than reinstalling windows and my various programs yesterday when I got the new C300:

I took this with my new phone that can do 720p, but obviously I had the wrong settings. I'm going to try to upload a higher quality video!

Now, what can I say Phil about your boot time? I am simply amazed for one more time within 24 hours
Excellent (will rep you as soon as it lets me).
I really have be to on alert now since the difference is almost 0.2 sec... -
Hehe thanks Stamastix, I followed all your tweaks. It turned out that the default MS SATA driver is faster than Intel, at least it boots faster.

I have a couple of tweaks in mind but I need to try them first myself to be sure. If they make any difference concerning the boot time I will post them here.

I am so tempted to do a secure erase and see what the Callisto will do in the U81-a, those 8 sec and under times look so cool............

I say I'm not taking this seriously yet I'm about to order a Crucial C300 just to see if I can shave another 0.2 seconds off...
Anyway some more entertainment, this time in 720p:
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/EnkOORJc-xo&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/EnkOORJc-xo&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width='425' height="344"></embed></object>Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
Now that is becoming even more interesting...
I bet that the C300 will crash my SSD -
Not sure about that. Brian from Storagereview has been saying the C300 doesn't perform that well in a notebook. But he was referring to multi tasking, maybe it's different for straight forward loading. I think it is.
Anyway, I pulled the trigger and a C300 should be here in a couple of days.

Right now I am looking into a couple of tweaks. After that I will secure erase my disk (damn this is my working drive, I have to install everything back to be ready for tomorrow, it's 1:25 am here) and hope for a 6 sec boot time...
I haven't tried boot timer with my R2 (Intel Chipset, i7 CPU), that 7.378 sec was with my R1 (nvidia Chipset, C2D CPU)...
Stay tuned.. -
You guys are getting close, waiting for the first person with the "Instant On"............
-
LOL that's hard, especially with my laptop since is taking forever to POST
-
Les and Phil, and anyone else here that has tried to help us, I can only say this... now you see why the old saying "Never use Hippie Lettuce before typing on a forum" was coined.
Now about those boot times....I need to figure out how to get about 3 seconds off mine....time to tinker. -
Maybe I can help a bit. This is roughly what I did:
- clean install
- don't fill in any password
- disable windows update
- disable uac
- disable hibernation
- disable system restore
- disable readyboot
- disable superfetch, indexing
- set visual effects on best performance
- make desktop background black
- disable sounds
- enable write caching
- disable indexing
- disable page file
- remove windows features (Windows search and more)
- launch msconfig, disable services and startups
- run boottimer
Most of these points are explained in this thread by Stamatisx and Les.
Make sure not to connect any hardware (monitors, mouse etc) after the clean install. Don't run Windows update and don't install any programs... not even Adobe flash. -
Thanks Phil. I have done all except the black background, disabling services and startup and enabling write cache. Thanks again. Nice times...I am looking forward to watching you and Stamatixs ongoing quest for the zero startup time. Also, I am sure you know, for every guy like Y there are 99 like the rest of us that appreciate guys like you all that just like to help us. Now on to cutting my time to under 10 seconds...

The purpose of this thread, as is the rest of this forum, is for users to help each other in good faith. Specifically, this thread is for users to check out the fast boot times of others, and for those with exceptional speeds to help others optimize their systems to boot quickly as well. If you seriously doubt someone's claims, contact the person in question through PM. And if you don't care for fast boot speeds, just simply click away from this thread.
I've deleted many posts in this thread in an effort to keep this thread on topic. Further offtopic posts will be deleted as well, and official warnings will be given out. Thank you. -
Wow! How did you do that?
-
wait I did it again and recorded that with my cellphone in 5.616 sec!!! give me a second to transfer the image to another laptop and upload it. I have the video as well.
-
I have no doubt you did it. But how.. that is what I want to know.
But yeah upload the video too. Btw my video was taken with my cell phone as well. -
OK this is the screenshot for the 5.616 sec boot time
The video will take me a while and I will probably upload it to mediafire as file to download
*EDIT*
I don't know for how long will they host it, so don't start any dramas if you can't download it

(sorry for the bad quality, it's an old phone)
Phil, I have spent some time trying different settings and found what gave me the best results. Give a few days (it's 3:23am here) and I will post screenshots of all of them probably on Sunday (at least as many as I can remember from the new ones)

Maybe I'm doing this wrong, but I decided to try it once disabling my services and startups, and this only reduced the boot time from 12.620 to 12.168 sec.
I had been testing the boot time using all the normal services and startups that I actually need to run my laptop on a daily basis, but excluding irrelevant services such as Fax, Telephony, Windows Search, Offline Files, Remote Desktop, Adaptive Brightness, HP-related services, etc., and the time was 12.620 sec.
I opened msconfig and checked disable all for the services tab and the startup tab. I noticed that when I ran boottimer, it automatically added itself back to the startup tab and to the services tab as "Group Policy Client" - the result was 12.168 sec.
did I do this incorrectly?
