Is there any good software for power management?
I am looking for something that is easy to use and will cover all bases for power savings such as: underclocking cpu and gpu, screen brightness, unnecessary programs running in the background, disabling optical drives and wireless cards etc.
I know I can do it all myself but I would like to have a simpler and more user friendly way to get it done.
any suggestions?

........(crickets) hello? (crickets)

to be honest mate i dont think there is an all in one solution, although if someone could write one theres a nich market i think.......... but dont quote me on that
-
That would be a monster of a program, if it existed. And who ever can write such a program deserves a medal.
-
yeah thats what i was thinking....

wish i could say I had the skills. oh well.
got to say I'm still rather surprised this hasn't been done. -
lol. LOL. LMAO!!!! I should give you rep just for that. -
Thinkpad's have it...but that is all I know about and you have to have a Thinkpad in order for it to work properly....
And FYI, the program is only about 30MB -
If you use Vista you can download Vista Battery Saver, it automatically dims your screen and disable Windows Aero when you switch to battery power which can boost your battery life a bit, but it doesn't underclock or anything like that.

On my Dell with zero optimizations, I can easily get 5 hours of runtime with the 9 cell. I can get about 2.75 hours on my HP tz2500's 6 cell. That's with a mostly vanilla installation, with no processes tweaked, Aero on, and a wallpaper. With all the tweaks on, I can squeeze 15 minute extra on average. But rarely have I needed 15 extra minutes.

Such a program would be nearly impossible to write. The few programs that attempt even a single one of those things generally have a lot of trouble keeping up with hardware and making it possible for both new and advanced users to make use of.

Windows does some of those things. Intel Speedstep alters CPU clock speed. The OS controls screen brightness, and some other little things. NVidia cards also have powermiser which downclocks the GPU, so combined you can already have most of this covered if you run Vista or 7. -
Well it does underclock the CPU, but I don't know about the voltage.
Power Mngr software for battery life.
