Can anyone write up a list of Pros and Cons of either?

    I heard that a Clean install = more 3dmarks??!

But with a clean install, don't you lose all the "included" software? like Burning software.....Office?(assuming it did not come with th cd/dvds)...?

Have you visited any of the manufacturer boards? There are tons of postings regarding the pros and cons of sticking with preinstalled software vs reinstalling yourself.

yep clean install will generally have better performance due to not having bloatware etc.. and yes if you are going to use a clean install then u will lose all of you're programs. but there are many freeware version available that are just as good. If you got software cds with your laptop then there shouldn't be a problem anyway!

It depends on a manufacturer. Some will provide you with only important programs and utilities preinstalled, some will put loads of crap in it. Just have a look at what you have first, and only then make your decision.

some of the programs installed can't get completely gotten rid of and also doesn't show up in add/remove programs as uninstallable.

If you want a completely free slate then you should do a fresh install. You can just remove the programs you want though and run CCleaner to clean out the remaining junk.

I don't trust anyone's work but my own. Therefore I always do a clean install.

Factory images do not know you, and do not set themselves up for your benefit. They are made for a wide audience, and made to pad the pockets of companies getting paid to advertise trial products.

If any of the included software is of any value (ie. Office) it would come on a disc. Also, some of the bloated apps they stuff on these things can be substituted with free and much more efficient software.

If your notebook is Sony Vaio, the king of bloatware, you should definitely do a clean install. My Vaio was preloaded with trial office, trial Corel, trial Norton, trial everything...

Yeah, HP is notorious for the same thing. I actually don't know if it even has anything to do with the different manufacturers. Doesn't Microsoft put the bloatware of the OS's?

At least several browser hijack programs on XP, LOL. Hopefully not pre-installed

I'm sure it's going to be soon for Vista, lucky so far, and a good reason to know how to do a clean install and have your driver disk made if needed ;)

Have you ever owned a Sony? Sony really knows how to hide and bury their own apps.

It depends on the manufacturers. My Toshiba has bloatware installed but not as many as my Sony Vaio. And no bloatware if doing a clean install, so I doubt its on Microsoft.

Good point. I got my HP a while back and it came with tons of bloatware. Surprisingly, though, it didn't seem to bog me down and I actually used some of the programs and apps.

Norton needs to die in a fire. It used to be a decent anti-virus but now it completely sucks.

Wow, some people have said it's the other way around. I have heard from many people that it's not nearly the resource hog that it used to be. Nowadays, I hear it's very light and just as effective as it's always been. I don't know for sure, as I completely abandoned Norton a long time ago.

Me too, Norton WAS the virus. I also tried Mcafee, and it almost drove me crazy, well, a little more crazy shall I say. :D.
