In terms of marketing and perceptions, that is![]()
Windows 95 had a phenomenally successful launch, and has been used as a measuring stick for success by Microsoft for every Windows launch since then (e.g. "Windows Vista will be bigger than Windows 95"). Of course, none of the Windows releases since have even come close to Windows 95.
So do you guys think that Windows 7 will finally live up to the claim? Will people be lining up for hours at Best Buy on October 22nd just to be the first in line to get their hands on Windows 7? Will random celebrities start claiming on talk shows that Windows 7 has changed their life? Yes, this sounds like the iPhone or PS3 launch, but it actually happened for Windows 95.

No, i doubt it. Windows 95 was revolutionary, it was a time where many were trying to advance their lives with tech that was growing at a rapid pace. Now, many people have computers, the need to rush out and get the latest version of Windows has diminished greatly. I doubt that any significant lines will be forming for W7 as revolutionary certainly isn't one of it's qualities, IMO.

I say NO. Because Windows 95 is the prime and the origin of all Windows. XD
No Windows 95 = No Windows 7.
No parents don't have son/daughter.
There is a phrase like the newer generation will surpass the older 1. LOL.
This topic is arguable. XD -
No, unless MS puts all of their geniuses together and comes up with something that completely change the concept of an Operating system.

No. Windows 95 was absolutely revolutionary. Try using Windows 3.1 vs. Windows 95. It was a huge leap and vast improvement over it's precessor. Windows 7 is a great improvement over Vista, but not revolutionary. I think if Windows 7 as it is today followed XP in 2005 it would have been amazing.

It wont beat Windows 95, it's a fact. When Windows 95 was released it was very successful and many people stopped using Netscape which was the dominating browser at that time. Windows 95 was responsible for Netscapes bankruptcy.
-
The poll seems that Windows 7 beats Windows 95.
I can smell this situation is due to human brain directly reaction. Which is didn't think twice before voting.
Can't blame. -
No and yes.
I predict that Windows 7 will have have a very successful launch, perhaps just as good as Windows 95.
Beat in terms of innovation at a UI level? of course not. It does have a new things, but nothing as big as what Windows 95.
Beat in terms of innovation at a Core level? That was Vista, presenting a new core for new technologies. From my perspective Vista core is better designed than Win95 and NT3 kernel. Some few things about Vista core that beats the previous Windows kernels, are: security, stability, driver architecture component (not tied to the kernel, restarting computer is optional upon installing new/updated drivers. If driver crash, it can be restarted without BSOD), and its superb memory management. Sadly that was Vista... not Win7.
Beat in quality of product? I believe it's a close race. Windows 7 is very polished. Not perfect. I do expect some issues after release. But these are inevitable, and Win95 wasn't perfect, either. -
NO and thats why I still use win 95 today... When my new laptop comes Ill be downgrading imediatly, installing Aol, download some punters, and hit the chat rooms with a vengance.

Windows 95 was like Alice in the wonderland for me. -
Wasn't 3.1 great?
Beat the crap out of Windows 95!
Um all seriousness, no W7 won't beat 95, it's just not as innovative. -
Yea, Minesweeper under Win3.1 was way better than the one under Win95.
-
Does it matter? The point being?
-
Beat Win95 in performance? Oh hell yes.
In terms of marketing success, who knows? 41% of corporate IT departments have already said they'd be migrating to 7 from XP/Vista, so that in itself is a huge accomplishment.
I believe that 7 will be the new gold standard for OSs from Microsoft for a few years, like XP was. -
Compare 7 to vista - well, there isn't much to say really!
Compare 95 to anything before that - that's like penguin and eagle! -
I remember the old 3.1 File Manager displayed free disk space in KB!!!!!
It wasn't til 3.11 that they changed it to MB!!
I miss the old double paned File Manager -

-
i dont remember anything about 3.1 a lil about 95, i'm was too young to use a computer..

Not even close. Windows 95 was like the PS2, the iPhone... people lined up to get their copies. As someone else mentioned, it was a paradigm leap right at a time when computers were coming to be perceived as a tool for personal and career enrichment. Remember, Windows 95 was the software that would get Joe Sixpack on the internet.
Windows 7, as mass-market perceptions go, is Vista with different graphics. As much as I like and am impressed by W7, I'm under no illusions that it will enable something that I previously was not able to do under even Windows XP.
Predictions: Will Windows 7 beat Windows 95?
