    SO,
My new CS has Home Premium 64 bit. I did do thorough research, and a critical piece of software will not install.

I use SAS 9.1.3 Statistical software... not supported in VISTA or 64 bit at all. BUT... if I get Service Pack 4, I can use 32 bit Ultimate or Business...

There is also a version where 64 bit would work, but that is less likely for me.

SO... if my Sony came pre-loaded with Home Premium 64 bit, how do I get to Business 32 bit? Any chance I can get an OEM key or some such from the OEM Sony installed? OR am I stuck buying a new Vista Disc?

You're stuck buying a new Vista disc as your license only covers Vista Home Premium (both 64 and 32 bit versions).

look for a 3GB RAM model. generally the ones with 4GB come with 64 bit OS.

And believe me, 3 GB and 4 GB have no noticeable performance difference under normal circumstances.

I too have some software problems with 64 bit, so I made the same choice..

@ Hep... I thought that was my only option... I just wonder what happens when I try to put Business over Home Premium.

@dingbat... yeah, I knew exactly what I was getting. I thought I had checked all the critical software. I could've sworn I checked the SAS site.

    What a stupid I am! :(

I am considering exchanging for an SR...MicroCenter had one that was configured good for my situation, but it is more expensive. I hope I can get them to waive the open box fee on this one...

Thanks... and any input on that Business over/replacing Home Premium on a Sony Vaio would be helpful!

It will just tell you that the key is not valid for Business. If you want, you could install a 30 day trial of Vista Business by entering no key when you install it.

Programs should not have any difficulties installing on Home Premium if it can install on Business. Programs do not differentiate between different versions of Vista, only between 32-bit and 64-bit.

Not true, I thought the same thing, but not true. Some niche programs will not work on certain editions of Vista.

Hep is correct. First, it would not begin to install because of the 64 bit op sys.

Then, when I really dug into the issue on SAS's website, specifically stated for ver. 9.1.3 SP4 that 32 bit Vista Business, Ultimate, Enterprise are good. No Home Versions

And for ver. 9.2 up to 64 bit Bus, Enter, Ult but again not Home in either flavor.

So, I think I am going to upgrade via right-click computer, properties, upgrade vista to Business 32 bit. I was told I would receive a Key and then get mailed a disc.

IF I do this, I understand it is a clean install... I don't think I will miss Sony bloatware, but what about the webcam? Can I get drivers? I have made Recovery Discs of the original set up (the Premium 64 bit).

    Thanks
    T

Keep in mind that there may be a distinction between "supported" and "works". They may only "support" Vista Business... but if you don't need tech support, it may not matter. On the other hand, it might. I just mean... don't assume something won't work just because it's not officially supported.

You probably do need 32-bit Vista though, unfortunately.

I'm guessing all the Sony stuff will be fine on 32-bit, but check in the Sony forum.

You sound like our Site Licensed Software department :D

They basically said the same thing; there are issues with Home versions and 32 versus 64 bit, but they have work arounds. However, I wanted Business more than Premium and 32 bit is fine for this... But, the Premium 64 bit was RIGHT THERE, ready to go home with me... Ah well, another reminder that gratification delayed is usually more gratifying. ;)

Again, any thoughts, hints, helps etc. are appreciated. I do try to follow the clean install threads and such. I will be happy to dump a bunch of bloatware, trial Office, 'ad-supported MS Works (never heard of that, but I sure don't need some MS program updating advertisements on my office applications....OpenOffice, here I come)
