I'm trying to disable vista search indexing but when I uncheck "Index this drive for faster searching" in Local Disk properties I keep gettined "Access Denied." It says that I need to provide administrator permission to change these attributes.

So.. then I went into the security tab and messed with a few things...
Under 'Group or user names' there should be Authenticated Users, SYSTEM, Administators, Users but some how Authenticated Users got deleted under that list. I'm kind of lost here and don't know what I'm doing exactly. Can I please get some help?

I'm using Vista Home Premium 32 bit and was follow the directions in http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166532

    Thanks!

I don't recommend disabling search -- it's really nifty and useful and it's a good timesaver -- but if you insist on disabling it, the easiest way to do that is to run "Services" and disable the "Windows Search" service, and then reboot.

What does it do exactly? The thing is I touched something in the security tab in Local Disk Properties and I was wondering how I can change it back to normal.

Oh, right. If this was recent and you just want to undo all your changes, the easiest thing is to use System Restore. Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

You may have to reinstall any programs installed since the restore point... but that's more of an annoyance than a real problem. It might not even be annoying, if you haven't installed anything since then.

What you needed to do is once you get the access denied prompt for bootmem.sys I believe is on the next screen is to select "ignore all". That will remove indexing from the drive. ;)

The tradition here is that when you post a question with a problem and other folks lend a hand, that you come back and acknowledge what worked (or didn't), or if you find something on your own you share it with everyone else.
