I am trying to install Vista Ultimate on my girlfriends computer and am having some problems. Everytime that I try to install it the computer wont start up. It will get to the Windows symbol on startup and then after about 1-2 seconds on that screen, the screen flashes the BSOD (I think) for a split second before restarting. I tried several times to install the OS and keep getting the same error. I have tried repairing the installation and upgrading from Home Premium with no luck. Her configuration is below.

    Dell Inspiron 1420
    Intel Core 2 Duo T5550(1.83GHz, 667Mhz, 2M L2 Cache)
    2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm
    160G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
8X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive for Inspiron
    Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini Card

    Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like you need to install the AHCI driver before installing vista.

First, save the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver(you can download it from the dell support website) to a USB drive. After that, begin the reformatting steps.

    1. Boot with vista ultimate disk.
    2. Format the drive desired.
    3. After it formats the drive, there will be a button that says "Load Driver". Click it and install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver from the USB drive to that newly formatted drive.
    4. Start the vista installation.
