Ok so.....I've done it before on many computers without problems.

However, I am trying to install Windows XP on my Toshiba Satellite 5105....old laptop....pretty bad but...

I format the disk and then I complete that part of the installation. The system reboots and goes into the real installation....39 Minutes part...

During the part where it installs devices.....I get a big error message everytime I try installing. I've tried three times now. It is an error with the nv4_mini.sys

Any ideas? The comp gives the message as a BSOD and then doesn't even reboot itself.

what type of graphics card do you have? its usually known with nvidia. also Some malware camouflage themselves as nv4_mini.sys, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder. check the nv4_mini.sys process on your pc to make sure that isnt the problem..you can use Security Task Manager for verifying your computer's security. you can download it from http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/index.html?ref=file.net, good luck.
p.s. is this the full error message you get STOP: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF8F41604, 0XF9E80DD8, 0XF9E80AD4)

    nv4_mini.sys - Address F8F41604 base at F8EE0000, Datestamp 40746958

    or is it something different?

The card in the laptop is nVidia GeForce MX440 Go.

Yes, that's exactly the message I get...with a lot of other text above it.

However...there is no way to check the process...I can't get into Windows....not even in Safe Mode.

well its usually linked to nvidia so your gfx card is most likely the problem.

Well....I'm just gonna give up and say it's a hardware problem. Like you said....the graphics card seems to have sustained physical damage.

    How? I have no idea...

another thing you could do is go to dogpile or google and type in our nv4_mini.sys error message. it will give you links and maybe it will help you find out what exactly is wrong with your gfx card.
Exactly how old is that card anyways? and what OS did you have on your system b4?

It could also be due to corrupted driver files (damaged CD). Try with a different CD, or at least try to copy all the files of the CD on to the hard disk from another computer to see if the entire CD is readable.
