Hello!
My brother purchased a new laptop a week ago HP Compaq 4gb ram,500gb hd 512 mb Nvidia, with vista home p. sp1.Downloaded all updates from microsoft and installed sp2,updated bios.
The issue is when he presses the power key to start windows it´s not booting up sometimes,it gets a frozen black screen just after "press a key to get to boot menu"message, and then nothing happens, the screen is black and frozen and i noticed that the hdd light is not flashing as it does on my laptop before getting to windows logging bar.
is there anyone who could please to help with tips an advice?
Thanks alot!!

Can you restore the comp back to the original? If yes then do it.
How did you pick up SP2? from MS updates, or direct from MS download site?
cheers ... -
I would exchange the laptop if it's under the return policy. Never waste your time debugging or fixing something when you can just get it replaced for free.

Thanks for replying.
Sp2 was installed automaticly throgh the Windows update.
I ´ve ordered now the upgrading dvd from hp to clean install W7 to see if it gets better and more healthy!
I´ve been starting up the laptop many times since yesterday and it did not cause any issues,,,strange!! It seems to work flawless now...i hope.
Thought to reinstall vista next time if that issue appears. That was what the hp`s support asked me to do.I´ll wait and see, it seems now getting ok.
Thanks. -

Have you tried calling for tech help? I mean directly from where you bought your brother's new notebook?
If things don't work, just like Lithus said, just exchange it for a new one. Figuring it out alone would just waste your time and be deemed as a futile exercise considering the warranty that still covers your brother's newly bought notebook... -
I had the same problem. Once only. After hibernation it didn't want to start. I also posted here and after few hours lying on the desk I tried it again and it started. Since then, no problems.

could not eithet go in into bios,it´s not responding! It did it twice now ! When i pull out the battery and put it back ,it´s starting normally.

Did you have any usb thumb drive plugged in when powering up the laptop?
Cause for new laptops, the order of boot is boot from usb thumbdrive first followed by harddisk.
You have to change the boot order in the BIOS.
But before that, unplug any device including mouse and get to the BIOS. -
Yes actuelly,i have just the mouse plugged in!
Called support today and he said i have to pull out the battery an unplug the AC and then press the power key 30 sec.just to empty the power totally from the motherboard and bios. It´s starting now normally, will wait a couple of days to see if it´s ok!
Thanks for responding! -
Just get do a CLEAN Installation of OS(download windows vista 64bit installer from torrent, burn cd image, install and activate). I think it might help. 64bit and 32bit License Key is same. So, you don't have to worry.
Restore to Default Factory is another option of course. But the problem might strike back easily after you updated it to SP2 again.
Personally, I don't think it is OS related.
Possibly, it is MotherBoard related and BIOS too.
My laptop have similar problem too but very seldom occur(once per month).
I turn on the laptop, it boots and then turn-off after loading the Logo of Acer.
I need to turn on again after that. LOL.
Sometime, when shutting down, the screen and so on all turned off already. The HDD still haven't turn off. XD
I tried Vista 32bit and Vista 64bit, no luck. Windows 7 64bit also the same.
Tried a few BIOS released by Acer. Still same. LOL.
However, this problem is harmless I guess because I have this problem since the 1st day I got this laptop(19months now) and my laptop still working XD. -
