When I try to download a file to the desktop from any website, rather than saving that file to my desktop folder, it instead saves it to this directory:

"C:\Documents and Settings\username\__", where "__" is the actual name of the folder.

I've also noticed that installation programs have ceased to put new menus into my start menu.

Does this have anything to do the fact that I'm using Microsoft Virtual Desktop? How do I fix it?

    Thanks.

Ok, after hours of experimentation, I finally got this figured out:

I'm using the Chinese version of XP. Under CP > Regional & Lang Settings > Advanced, there's an option that lets you choose the language for non-unicode programs. I had it set on Canadian English, because that's where I am.

It turns out programs such as firefox couldn't recognize my desktop and start menu folders because these two folders have Chinese names. 桌面 & 「开始」菜单 respectively.

I changed the language setting to simplified Chinese, and everything works fine now.
