I had to replace a broken hard drive in my moms computer. Her computer is an HP Envy dv6-7226nr. When I try to install Windows 8 from a dvd back onto the computer, it starts the installation process but then I get the message "a media driver your computer needs is missing." I also tried installing Ubuntu from another disc, but after I selected "install Ubuntu, all I got was a black screen. I'm not entirely sure about the Windows disc, but I've used the Ubuntu disc to install on two other computers, so I don't think the disc is the issue. I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could help get her laptop working again.

What is the new hard drive? If it's an original dvd, bought with laptop etc. It might not have drivers needed for the new drive, I had this a lot with ssd, got a new iso off windows website or torrents with latest sata drivers (and usb3 to get my setup finish in a few minutes, praise fast flash drives)

Anyways that's when I encountered it mostly. Though latest Ubuntu build should have all the necessary drivers to see the drive.

So is this the REcovery disk that came with the computer or did you order these REcovery disk to reboot the laptop? We need to know this as well. Also did that laptop come with Win7 or Win8? Alot of info is missing here to figure what is happening???

No your problem isn't related unless you have the same exact computer and doing the exact same thing the OP is doing. So don't jump to matching wrong conclusions as the same problems. Same question again are those Official REcovery disk or those you created or the ones you ordered form the Manufacture??? Alot of info missing here as well.

I got it figured out just after I posted this. I needed to install a hard drive driver, after that everything worked fine. I had to put all the drivers from HP's site on a flash drive and install that one during the windows install.

Also in case anyone is doing anything similar, you do NOT have to repurchase Windows 8. When I went to Best Buy to get the hard drive, I asked one of the employees if I would need to purchase Windows again, and he told me that I would. Now I didn't want to spend the money on that without letting my mom know first (she was paying for the hard drive) so I just got the hard drive and figured I'd have to come back later. The employee was wrong. After doing a bit more research online, I found that Windows 8 laptops have their product keys in the bios. So I just torrented a copy of Windows 8 (make sure it's the same as the one had installed previously, 32- or 64-bit, basic or professional, etc.). I read that if you installed it that way and didn't have a product key, you'd be prompted to purchase and activate it once it was installed. But it took the key from the BIOS and everything was fine.

I used to work at Best Buy and usually they're fairly knowledgeable about the products they work with, but some of them aren't and it pays to double check before spending a lot of money.
