I am trying to install windows onto the new hard drive. However after finishing partitioning the hard drive, and it started to copy system files, error messages stating cannot copy the files. After skipping a bunch of them, a BSOD popped up with the IRQL-NOT-LESS-OR-EQUAL. So in attempt to save my computer, I soon replaced the memory and the DVD drive, and the problem persists. I still cannot install windows. I also tried a different OS disc. Is there anything else that might be causing the problem?

Hmm, curious one... did you replace the cabling? I've seen something similar because of bad cables once but it wasnt IRQL

As above, replacing the cabling could help, and if not, try a different power supply, dodgy power can do pretty funky stuff. Of course these only help if this is a desktop.

could you please be a bit more specific what the exact error message was ?

would be good to know that.

anyway, here is what microsoft has in mind for possible solutions, besides exchanging the hardware. maybe you have done these things already, but if not it´s worth a shot. ( viable for installation of win xp)

    Good luck

The 0x value changes every time the IRQL message pops up. The latest one is "0x0000000A (0x0070b000, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x8081AB0C)". This is a 3.5 years old HP pavilion notebook. I tried to follow the solution provided by Microsoft, but my BIOS doesn't contain those options. It's a Phoenix BIOS. I've had many people looked at it, but they were all befuddled by the error message. I'll probably really have to give up on it.

well, maybe trying to figure out what´s the culprit might help.
typically a windows error message is built up like this :

    STOP 0x0000000A (A, B, C, D) comment

    Adress meaning

A ................................................................ Adress that was referenced incorrect

B ................................................................ The IRQL, that caused the memory access

    C ................................................................ kind of access ( 0= read 1= write )

D ................................................................. Adress, that tried to reference the incorrect address A

maybe you could find out what device 0x0000002 is.

I would try to reinstall the RAM sticks, I used to get this error once in a while on my desktop and later I discovered it was a ram stick that is not well connected. Just by taking it out and re-seating it to the socket solved the problem. Plus, there's more of a possibility that the ram stick falls out of place in a laptop since they are moved more often.

i was recieving this error on am old laptop when trying to do a system restore, it also occured when using retail xp Pro CD on blank HDD...

believe it or not, i solved it by installing Win98, updating BIOS.. then after BIOS update i was able to do either a restore or fresh XP install.

that all happened on my niece's compac presario 2700us
