When I try to turn off indexing in Vista I get the following message:
"an error occurred applying attributes to this file:
    c:\Boot\memtest.exe
    Access is denied."

    I can choose "Ignore/Ignore All/Try again/Cancel."

BTW I receive this message when checking OR unchecking the box that says "Index this drive for faster searching" in Properties under my C drive. So it seems whether I try to turn it on or off it's still showing the same error message.

I have a new d630 and the hard drive keeps accessing every few seconds. It's driving me crazy.

The strange thing is there isn't even an option to check or uncheck Windows Search in Services under msconfig. That would indicate it is shut off? But then why the error message above?

I shut off my virus program, tried different settings, and the hard drive continues to access(HD light flashes and I hear clicking every 2 seconds). Am I missing something? Can something else be causing it to access? It's a brand new computer with no junk installed! (It's Vista Business if that matters).

    Any help appreciated. Thanks.

    hmmm try this
    do command prompt, open c:\boot
right click the memtest exe file (in the bottom) and select properties
go to security, and do edit
    make everything "allow"
    apply
    now try

So choose Ignore. Indexing or not indexing one file isn't going to affect anything in any perceptible way.

As far as msconfig, it's not there, it's a service... run services.msc and you can disable/enable the "Windows Search" service. Although... I actually don't know if the indexing is done using that service, or just the searching, or what.

EDIT: ok, apparently it does the indexing... here's the description of the Windows Search service: "Provides content indexing and property caching for file, email and other content (via extensibility APIs). The service responds to file and email notifications to index modified content. If the service is stopped or disabled, the Explorer will not be able to display virtual folder views of items, and search in the Explorer will fall back to item-by-item slow search."
