I have a toshiba satellite m45-s331 and I occasionally back up movie DVDs that I already own, that way the originals do not get used so much. Anyways, I usually burn my ISO files onto a Sony DVD+R using DVD Decrypter...
I ran out of these type discs and borrowed some Memorex DVD-R and my laptop and the respective burning programs I use (Nero and DVDDecrypter) do not burn correctly.
Nero goes through the whole burning process, but then the DVD does not play. DVD Decrypter does not even recognize that there is a writeable medium in my dvd drive.

I tried a couple other programs and I'm fairly sure that the blank dvds are the problem. However, my dad who also owns a toshiba satellite laptop (higher model, though, not sure which) uses these dvds and does not have problems with them.

I do not know of any such compatibility issues with + or - R. Does anyone know what the problem is?
I am really confused and I've already made 3 coasters out of the Memorex dvds. I am using Nero 6, if that matters....

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Did you check if there are firmwar upgrades for your optical drive?

It could be just that your drive doesn't like this media. Not necessarily type +/- but rather the media itself

It definitely sounds like the DVD reader drive on your laptop does not like the media at all, updating the firmware is one solution, get an external (or an internal with an enclosure), or get different media, same problem I have had before, it is just that the drive is too picky for its own good. Hope that helps.

Actually memorex DVDs aren't that great. Go with verbatim or tayo yuden

And your optical drive could be of any brand, they use different drives and brands with every different model.
