    hi there,

sorry if this is not the right place 4 this question but i wasnt really sure where to post it.

I've got some problem with my laptop...whenever i open a heavy application..like a game..or i even do a full pc virus scan after a few mins the laptop just shuts off directly (the power is cut off)..

Anyone has any idea what that might be?

    Thanks in advance :)

Have you checked the temperature? Some times laptop' shutdown as a preventive / precautionary measure, when its gets way too hot... Check up on this.... and while you are at it, you might want to make sure / confirm that you aren't blocking any of the vents, particularly the main intake vent!! let us know.. good luck.

Well... if its shutting itself down (and if its due to heat) you should probably feel the heat....

    Anyways.. get in CPUID's HWmontior > http://cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

And I don't know the temp for your model / system but if I would imagine / assume the temp ranges are kind of the same for all laptop', just make sure none of the temp go to level' like 85 - 90 or 95 C... GPU usually, even when under heavy load should be around 75-77C...

For example, the temp' may vary depending on the build and stuff, I guess..

For me, with the system in my Sig, normal temp' for CPU / GPU / HD are like approx. 35-40C / 55-60C / 35C

BUT I think its better if you could google around for any temp ranges for your model specifically (if there is any)....

ermm ok i d/l the program..the core temps are 75C GPU temp 65C and HD temp is 40C...

i assume the core temp is high?and i dont hv any heavy applications running now..jst the browser and msn :S

You are at 75C core temp, with just the browser and MSN????????

Thats HIGH mate... and now try to think how much it would be hitting when gaming or when you are full scanning or whatever.. obviously I would expect it to go beyond the limits, and the laptop' preventive shutdown mechanism is kicking in...

And the GPU temp also looks on the higher side for the given usage!!!!!!!!!!!

You might want to open up the laptop and clean it (if you have had it for a long time, and if you haven't cleaned it for a while)... you can use a can of compressed air to blow 'out'.. take care how you use the can directed, because you might not want to blow the dust or whatever more inside...

And check the vent', grills, holes, the fan etc etc.....

Else if its a relatively new laptop, you might wanna call tech support ASAP!!!!

OP: Have you tried undervolting yet ?

Run Orthos/prime95 to stress the CPU and record the max temp.

You can use 3DMark06 or rthdribl to stress the GPU.

^^ yeah they are good stress tools, as mentioned by Andy..... and if I may add, while the OP is at it with those tools mentioned by Andy, you might want to get in HDtune as well just to be sure about the main components...

    Hi,
I had the exact same problem with an old laptop of mine. Even flash videos would make it shut down. The problem was that there was a ton of dust inside it that prevented the cpu from cooling properly. I gave it to a computer repair guy because i wasn't comfortable opening the entire case and he cleaned it out for me. It was as good as new after that.

So you could have the same problem or it could be some other cooling issue.

ok thanks all,i dont feel comfortable opening the laptop as well..and since it's still in the warranty period i'll jst take it to the tech support...

how often shud i be cleaning the laptop to prevent the vents from being blocked?i've had the laptop for 9 months..and i just use an air blower to clean it from the outside..

See what temps you hit when stressing the CPU/GPU.

It could be a software conflict as well.

i doubt it's software conflict though cz i format the laptop and the problem is still present

    . run a memtest?
. scan our disk for error?
. check your pagefile? if not present, consider turn it back on for test and see

    cheers ...

rt hdr ibl stressed your GPU.. u have to do nothing.. just run the file... no install or anything needed...

Before u start let ur system idle with HWmonitor open.. so the min temp get recorded.. then start rt hdr ibl and let it run.. u will get a nice screen with some nice video n movie kinds and stuff.. just watch it may be :p or else u cud do something else too.. watch the temp' though... if u see temp' rising constantly, and going very very high (say beyond 85 or 90/95) u might wanna close it / stop it immediately...

Anyway, Looks like ur cooling unit / system needs a thorough check up mate... those CPU temp' are kinda too high, AFAIK and IMHO..

ok thanks fonduekid i'll try that..

qhn the pagefile is present and there are i did a disk scan and there were no errors..

    what's a memtest though?

Wow. What laptop is this? It sounds like the temps on my old HP Dv2819NR. My new Dell Studio 15 running msn and firefox's temps are only 43C for processors and 32C for hard drive. Your laptop's scorching!

lol well it's a Lenovo..but i dont think this has 2 do with the brand

i ran rthdribl for 15 mins and the temp rose from 65 to 73..

so to sum up..most prolly the vents are blocked and the laptop needs 2 be cleaned? or can it be something else?

    Did it stabilise at 73??

And in any case, min of 65 is not something normal...

U might need to give a nice clean up mate.. and also have the cooling unit / system checked...
