Windows update is set to automatic (Sony SZ160, XP pro sp2) and has worked well untill now. It now keeps wanting to install the most recent update, KB920872, even though it is listed as installed at least 10 times in the install history. Once I get a message that the install was successful, the yellow shield shows up in the tray asking to download and install again. I ran registry mechanic and rebooted several times, also ran virus scan but no help. How do I fix this?

You can uncheck the box and click install. Windows Update will ask you if you want to never be notified about this update again. Jusk click Ok and that update will never bother you again.
