Every now and then, when I close the lid of my laptop for sleep mode for the night, I notice in the morning that it wasn't "sleeping". With my Internet connection always on, this can be a safety problem.

    Can that be fixed?

When this happens, do you have any external hardware plugged in that is not normally present? Programs still running/not responding? When I put my laptop in "Sleep" mode for the night, I make sure it actually is "sleeping" before I leave. ;)

    Cheers... :)

I do make sure it goes to sleep before I leave it. It "wakes up" in the middle of the night.

    Oh, I see. That's weird. :p

I found this in another forum...

Look in Device Manager. Take a look Human Interface Devices, mouse and keyboards. Select Device > Properties > Power Management > uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer"

Here also are some other suggestions.

Finally, maybe check on this solution I found from yet another site:

By default, Windows Update is configured to check for updates everyday at 3am, and by default it's allowed to wake the computer to make the check.

It is possible to disable this behavior in the group policy editor (run gpedit.msc). It's under: Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Update and the setting is called: "Enabling Windows Update Power Management to automatically wake up the system to install scheduled updates."

    Hope this helps...

    I changed it from 3am to 11am.

    I couldn't find them.

    gpedit.msc didn't run (error message)

Well, if you changed it, then you don't actually need to go through gpedit.msc and find that option. :p

However, that's kind of strange. You went to Start > Run and typed gpedit.msc and that didn't work? What error message did you get?

Also, did you get to look at any of those other solutions?

Well by changing the time, all I am doing is having it wake up at a different time - not in the middle of the night. What I'd like to find out, is a way to not "Enable Windows Update Power Management to automatically wake up the system to install scheduled updates."

I did look at the other options and none of them offered an adequate solution.

Alright, this may be a bit of a chore, but if you download this sheet, you should be able to find the registry entry corresponding to that setting in the Group Policy Editor.

I'd look into it myself, but I'm moving to college today, and really have to finish packing my truck.

    Cheers... :p
