When I initially installed Vista I created an extra 100 gb partition. Whenever I opened disk management I had this:

    [EISA configuration 47MB][C 200GB][D 100GB][Partition 2.1GB]

So it appears I had some small disk that just says EISA configuration, my C drive, my D partition, and another partition which I believe is for Dell Media Direct but I'm not positive.

I decided I wanted to made D larger by shrinking C in Vista. I shrunk C by 50 gigs and tried to extend D. However, whenever I right click D, the extend option for Vista is greyed out. I looked around and found that maybe since they weren't next to each other I couldn't expand D.

So I tried to delete the D partition as well in hopes of just creating a new drive that would be able to take the 50 GB from C and the freely created space from D (don't ask why I thought this would work...). Anyways, I created a new D that was 50 GB from the open space on C. At this point, I have this:

    [EISA configuration 47MB][C 200GB][D 50GB][Free Space 100GB][Partition 2.1GB]

However, now I can't extend D to take up that 100 GB free space. I basically give up and just try to make the 100 GB another partition on its own but whenever I try to create another partition it says there is not enough available space on the disk.

So now what do I do to recover that last 100 GB of space I've lost now? Can I not create another partition because I already have four? I'm so thoroughly confused now.

EDIT: Added attachments of photos. I tried deleting my D and recovering at least the 100 gb of free space as a new D and just reexpanding my C to get back to my original configuration but no matter what I do with the 100 gb of free space (delete it or try to create a new simple volume) I get errors.

EDIT2: I just added the 50 gb of space back to C then created my D and that worked so I'm back to my original config. So now it seems like there is no possible way for me to extend the D drive on my computer is there?

The Shrink Volume feature in Vista has some serious limitations, see the explanation here,
you might want to try GParted Live CD to resize your partition, guide here.

You should try Gparted or get Acronis Disk Director
