The basic problem I have is that once I upgraded to windows 7, i now have no administrator privileges even though I am the only user on this laptop and it says "administrator" on user description. For example, I can't delete files because it says I need permission. I can run programs fine by right clicking and running as administrator, but I can't seem to do anything else. Anyone else had this problem and can help me fix it.

you need to read up on the differences between the user named 'administrator' and what administrator privileges really are. there is a huge difference, much of which is newly introduced in win7 as security changes.

the basics are available via google.

Okay, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the difference, but I lowered the UAC so that it will never notify me. The option says to not do this unless there are programs that are incompatible with windows 7. Even though I did this, I still don't have privileges to do things such as look at my screenshots from World of Warcraft.

If I rename my username to President, does it give me presidential priviledges? :) Username "administrator" is just a name for a user account. It still does not have all the priviledges, no account has.

Those files were saved in Vista, and now you have upgraded system. The user is no longer same and you aren't allowed access to those files unless you temporarily gain admin priviledges.

Solution, right click on the folder you wish, open Properties and choose Sharing and Security tab. Take ownership of your old files, then you can access them as you wish.

I did what you said and I got up to the part where I can edit the ownership of this particular folder. The problem is that the owner IS me. I tried to restore the previous version of this folder, but it says I require permission from "Username"-PC/"Username" even though I am on the user and am listed as the owner. Is there anything I'm missing because I followed the troubleshoot information as well, which shows me how to give privileges to other users. The problem is that I am the only user and can't give privileges to anyone else.

if your files are under program files folder or other system protected folder this is your issue. It just isn't the work/file folder storing the files but it inherits properties from folders under it as well.............

This is strange. If you turned off UAC, then the Program Files folder is no longer protected. Can you move the files or is that denied?

If turn off UAC, you remove the security layers place.. upgrading your account to true Administrator like Windows XP and older. And we all know what THAT did. Oh boy... what a mess that was.
