Hi!
Recentely the internal HDD of my Dell Vostro 1500 crashed.
I was able to perform a Complete PC-Restore back-up via Windows Vista Business.
I got a new internal HDD: a Hitachi's 7K500 250GB to replace my old crashed Seagate 5400 rpm 160GB HDD.
Luckely I got al my files and programs back via Vista's Complete PC-Restore.
But now I noticed a problem...
Windows does see that I have a new internal HDD, as it is in the hardware list, but when I go to "My computer" and take a look at the size of my "C"-disk (OS), it looks that Windows still thinks that I'm using the old 160GB HDD. Because it still gives the same amount of diskspace as with my 160GB HDD, and not the amount that it should give for a 250GB HDD.
When looking in the BIOS, I see that the computer does know that it is a 250GB HDD.
I think that, due to the Complete PC-Restore, Windows thinks that it's still running on a 160GB HDD... But on the other hand, why does it says in the hardware list that it sees the new Hitachi HDD?
So... what can I do about it?
How can I make my C-disk "show itself" as a 250GB disk and not as a 160GB disk?
Regards,
Jurgen

It is possible that the restore only made a 160GB partition, and left the other ~70GB of the disk alone.
Right click on My Computer, hit Manage, then go into the Disk Manager. What do you see? -
Well, Greg...
When looking at the Disk Manager, it seems that the 232.88 GB HDD is divided into:
* a 118MB section
* a 10.00GB Recovery NTFS (D: ) section
* a 136.43GB NTFS (C: ) operating system section
* a 2.5GB section
* a 83.84GB not assigned section
What should I do? -
Can you right click on C partition and click extend volume?
Alternatively if you do not really need the space, you could format the ~83GB as NTFS, assign it a different letter and use it for additional backups/place to store photos, movies etc. -
Nope Kdawgca,
Disk Manager shows it like this, from left to right:
* a 118MB section (EISA-configuration)
* a 10.00GB Recovery NTFS (D: ) section (primary partition)
* a 136.43GB NTFS (C: ) operating system section
* a 2.5GB section (primary partition)
* a 83.84GB unallocated disk space section
When right-clicking on the 118MB partition, I only get "Help".
When right-clicking on the (D: )-partition, I can make the partion smaller or delete it.
When right-clicking on the (C: )-partition, I can only make it smaller.
When right-clicking on the 2.5GB partition, I can only delete it.
When right-clicking on the ~84GB of unallocated disk space, I can only "create a new simple volume" (hope that's written correctly, as I'm translating everything from Dutch to English...). -
You won't be able to extend your C: partition into the 83GB unallocated space because D: is in between (even if your picture shows otherwise). You will need a third party partition program to do what you want easily. There are many free programs to do this and probably each poster will recommend a different one. Easeus partition manager (free edition) is located here http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm and will do what you want. You will want to merge the unallocated space with C:.
Do you have any idea what is on the 2.5GB partition? -
No, I don't really know what's on this 2.5GB partition. It doesn't have a letter assigned to it.
I assumed that it wasn't in use. I deleted it and turned it into free space. Then I could add the ~84GB partition to my (C: )-partition.
I hope I didn't do something wrong by deleting this 2.5GB partition... -
