Whenever I watch HD movies (720p or 1080p) I get this every few minutes:

    http://a.imagehost.org/view/0792/Capture

happens for about a minute or two and then clears up. It happens in MPC-HT and WMP 11. I've tried with both CCCP and K-lite codec Pack. Anyone know what might be the cause? Specs are in my sig. Am running Vista home premium SP1.

It might be caused by you overclocked graphics , try default clocks and see if it happens.

It is not caused by my OC, I was at default asus underclocks (500/800/1250) until yesterday, and this problem has been going on the entire 3 months I've owned the laptop. Also- I am currently only at 550/950/1375, nvidia reference clocks for the 260M. It only happens when watching 1080/720p video. normal DVDs don't cause it, and no games/benchmarks cause artifiacts.

have you tried a full re-install of your OS, maybe from the recovery partition, you might have a corrupt codec and sometimes a system wipe is the quickest way to fix a problem.

I've reinstall several times, win7/vista/xp as well as tried every driver I could think of from 179.88 to 195.55. Also, I've been using the DXVA codec to offload rendering to my GPU, am going to try shutting that off and seeing if it gets any better.

It sounds like a hardware fault, maybe over-clocking has caused damage, it`s strange you say it only shows up when playing hd or fullhd videos.

Do you still have any Warranty left.

yep..plenty of warranty. but like I said, this has happened from the day I got the laptop, and I didn't OC til a month after..I'm fairly sure its not OC damage.

I've not tried VLC, but after turning off DXVA I've had no problems. I've played at least 30, maybe 40 HD movies on here and all of them had that issue. I just think its a conflict with DXVA and my card.

This is most likely a software issue. Especially if it is at regular intervals.

You should hit up the VLC forums. This is what I had to do on one of my machines. List the codec and container format of the file you are playing along with the drivers you are using.

Thats just the thing, its a multitude of codecs and drivers. But it doesn't happen if I shove the rendering load onto the CPU instead of GPU. I'll dl VLC and test with a 1080p movie later and see whats up, if there are still issues with DXVA I'll hit up the forums as you suggest, thanks surfasb.

    The solution, is:
    1-Remove ALL codec pack
2- Update your videoi card drivers to the latest version if it's not.
3- Use CCleaner (free tool), to clean your registry
4- Download Shark007 codec pack. It's specialized for Vista and Win7 systems (it won't work under XP or older Windows). It also doesn't conflict with Windows built-in codec packs. If you have Vista 64-bit, you can install the 64-bit codec pack add-on to it, which allows you to enable Windows Media Player 64-bit for greater performance on your video playback.

    32-bit: http://shark007.net/vistacodecpackage.html
    64-bit add-on: http://shark007.net/x64components.html

It also provides you with thumbnail preview for Vista/Win7 64-bit.

KLite and CCC codec pack are optimized for XP and only works properly under Windows 2000/XP.

That's a scorched earth policy. May work, but that's the last resort IMO.
