    Hi.

    I reformated my computer.

    Then reinstalled the window XP.

However, there are problems with window updates.

As followed the instruction to manually activate the window updates.

Start > run > type services.msc>automatically updates>right click properties>enabled the start up type>start the service status.

    However, there is an error.

Could not start the automatical updates on local computer.
Error 1058 : The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices assoicated with it.

I reformatted the computer twice but still having this problem again n again.

    Pls help.

Funny, I had the exact same error couple days ago. My problem was a virus/spyware/rootkit that was not allowing the automatic update service to start. I could start it, but then it would be disabled, even after reformatting. Finally had to use a program to find and get rid of rootkits...

I used free sophos anti-rootkit on an xp machine for a friend, but that doesn't work on vista. Try a search for a free anti-rootkit, there are several out there. Also check for spyware, I couldn't believe how much my friends comp had and that might have been part of the problem also.

Ok first of all you'll need to download this and install it. Then go to 'Tools' in Internet Explorer, under 'Manage Add-ons' click 'Enable or Disable Add-ons'. You should leave the deafult highlighted in blue under Show: that says 'Add-ons currently loaded in Internet Explorer' and scroll down and look for a name that looks very unusual like JwDFfdgfg.dll

Take note of the name...it might have 1 or more of this unusual name...from here go to your 'Windows' folder on the C: drive, under 'System32' and look for the .dll file or files that u saw. You need to delete them and u wouldn't be able to without the Unlocker program u downloaded because the file or files are being used by the operating system. You will get access denied. So thats where Unlocker comes in. Right click on the file(s) choose unlocker, choose to delete and then 'unlock all'. You should get a successful dialog window when done. You may have to restart after.

    Good Luck

EDIT: After you restart, you can go ahead an re-enable Automatic Updates!
