I recently downgraded from Vista back to XP
due to some compatibility with my school software

    I must say that
during my use of Vista, my Windows Live Messenger
had no problem signing in at all

    however now back in XP
everytime i want to sign it,
    the error shows as
'You cannot use Windows Live Messenger at this time because your contact list is not available. Please try again later'
'Click Help to learn more about your contact list'
    Error code: 81000378

i really dont know what's going on :(
    can anyone help me?

Uninstall MSN Messenger and clear cookies in IE. Then install MSN Messenger again. Hope it works.

Search in google for the error code or exact error message. There are plenty of suggestions.

Any particular reason for the poem-like format of your post? :p
What is this, haiku-tech support? :D

Anyway, my universal solution would be to use another client (MSN/Live Messenger sucks anyway. Doesn't it still have ads too?)
Other than that, google the error code, try reinstalling it.

Now that you reminded me of haiku, it really looks like a poem! :D :D

    *Laugh till dawn*

Are you using the latest and
not so stable Windows Live Messenger 8.5?
    Sometimes it might be
    a connection problem
    or some server problem
    or server downtime
You will never know, as Microsoft keeps failures
    Hush-Hush.
