I uninstalled some programs (aol) and now I cannot connect to the internet from windows media player 10 (or even real player for that matter). I have even reinstalled to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

"programs" is plural. did you do anything else besides remove aol?
"ipconfig" from the command prompt and post your results here. it'll help with the troubleshooting.
what's your system? what's your network setup? how are you connecting? -

I removed aol from the control panel (install/uninstall)
I have a dell 9300 laptop w/ windows xp (media), my connection is through road runner cable w/ wireless router.
I also noticed that macromedia flash won't run either even though it is installed.

You don't happen to have IE7 beta installed as well, do you? Connecting with WMP became a cast iron pain in the rear after I installed IE7.

I also uninstalled media player and tried to reinstall. However, I get the following error from microsoft's site:
