. increase the interval of system scan from McAfee
. disable some of its functionalities that u feel secure enough not to be needed
. get rid of McAfee all together and get some other free and low foot-print av scanner (avast, avg ...)

    cheers ...

Have not been able to fix problem. When I tried to remove Mcafee I still had the same problem, it seems it is almost impossible (at least for a novice) to remove it. Family members still want Aol so getting rid of that is not an option right now. Any other suggestions, I'm sure many people are having the same issue. don't want to keep hitting end process.

    Ok,
From the "Start" menu choose "Run".
Type in "msconfig" and click "OK".
    Choose "Services"
    Uncheck "McAfee System Guards"
    Apply/Save then Restart computer.
When a notice that your system is not fully protected appears, double click it to open Security Center.
    Choose "Ignore"
    Close Security Center.
The problem child of McAfee, SystemGuard, is disabled.
