I'm trying to fix a friends computer that is having problems. He has vista business 32 bit. The computer sometimes does not connect to the internet. It get the little X at the bottom and says "server execution has failed"...the firewall does not turn on and it doesn't turn on manually. The same problem with his antivirus software. The updates on the antivirus software do not work and windows update does not work either.

I know I'm being a little vague here, but I don't have the computer in front of me so I can't really see the exact error codes

Well I can see why the AV software doesn't update and Windows Update don't work...there not connected to the internet.Turning on Windows Firewall doesn't need internet connection so that is the only problem I see from your post besides the not connecting to internet; which can be a lot of things...

A look in the Event Viewer around startup time would help diagnose this. It would show connection problems.

The thing is he had the AIM problem and fixed it using the add local service group as an administrator, which was a workaround and not really a fix. I had him delete AIM and DL trillian recently...I told him to reverse the AIM fix just now which seems to solve the internet connection problem. But the services in the security center are still not working.

Lol. Why would AIM be the culprit? I use it, and with no problems at all. ;o
Check to see if the services are enabled. Ex: Windows Firewall

Try restarting the WMI service. If your friend had disabled some services try starting them back.

When he goes to control panel and then click on security center, what does he see?
