Does anyone know what the upgrade process will be once the actual disk arrives to go from Vista 64 to Win 7 64. I'd like to do a clean install on my SAGER 5792 and some instructions would be nice.

Pics are always a bonus + details are appreciated. Reputation is ready to be given.

    Thanks!

Bro, use the following steps provided by Microsoft on clean installing the Win 7.

"clean" and "upgrade" are contradictory terms. If you do an upgrade of an existing OS, it's not clean by default.

The only "clean" upgrade involves buying a full install disc, nuking the existing OS partition, and installing fresh.

But with Windows 7, you can safely do a clean install with the upgrade DVD.

do you mean an upgrade from vis x64 to Win 7 x64 or a clean install (Booting from DVD) to install Win 7 onto a formatted hdd?

What happens to the documents/music/programs that are on the hard drive if you choose to do the "clean install" from the upgrade disc? Will they still be there after everything is complete?

Or should I back those up to a flash drive or something before doing the installation of Windows 7?

Also how confident are you that Windows 7 will launch without any major hiccups like Vista or the 360? I mean I have Vista and it's okay. And I have the beta for Windows 7 and so far it seems excellent. But I'm worried that it won't be that way at launch for various reasons. Some of my technology/computer advanced folks have said to wait until the first service pack for Windows 7 comes out before actually installing it. However that will probably be a while and I'd rather start enjoying the benefits of Windows 7 immediately.

Clean install is just that, clean. Expect everything to get wiped out. You'll need to back up everything you want to keep.

Even if you were doing an in-place upgrade, it's foolish to do so without having a good backup.

    Slightly confused about this Jessica....
I have Vista 64bit on my laptop - it came with it from Sager. I never actually bought Vista 64 at a store or anything it was just preinstalled on my system.

Can I do a clean install with the Win7 upgrade disk then, and just use my product key or w/e that big number relating to Vista is on the bottom of my laptop?

Also when doing the clean install - do your format first, then put the Win 7 disk in, or just put the Win 7 disk in and it will prompt you to format and repartition w/e?

    Thanks.

Yea QHN I'm quite certain you're right - JessicaD forwarded a link to me that I think she didn't quite understand and it cleared it up. Are we sure she even works for Microsoft, or just pretends too?

    My private convo.

Do you actually work for Microsoft?
I think you need to take a closer look at that.... that is for people who want to

    1. purchase a system now with Vista and upgrade later, or 2. have a system without vista and want to upgrade to win 7.

In those cases the person would have to purchase a version of Vista between the dates listed to be able to upgrade to win 7, or purchase a system now with Vista and get a free upgrade when it comes out.

It says no where that systems with Vista already pre-installed won't be able to use the upgrade disk, and does not even imply that. The quote you used is simply telling people who do not have Vista yet that if they purchase vista between those dates, they will be eligible for the upgrade.

Its plainly obvious, as with past versions and upgrade disks, that current vista users can use an upgrade disk on their systems as long as they have a valid license, which I do, and which all users who buy laptops pre-installed with an OS do.

I'm not sure if we've cleared up the issue about whether or not one can do a clean install of Windows 7 on a machine with pre-installed Vista. Can you please explain to everyone whether you can or can't and why or why not? There are so many people out there with valid pre-installed machines who would love to do clean install of Windows 7 with their upgrade discs....please do tell.

When you got you system and it came with the Vista System disk. That version is the OEM version. So you should contact Sager to see the best way to upgrade to Windows 7. Windows 7 acquired through Microsoft is the Retail version.

I am confused after reading the question of the thread owner. By what you say, you want a clean installation of Windows 7 on a pre-installed Windows Vista. Does that mean you want a dual boot Sager with both Vista and W7. If so, you can create a separate partition -> install the genuine Vista -> upgrade to W7.
    Sorry if I misunderstand you.
