Hi guys .. i am interested in knowing how many proceses are running on your notebook when you boot the OS.
Here is some data from my task manager
OS: Windows xp Home
No. of processes: 48
Available memory: 1.6 Gb out of 2 Gb
Process taking most memory: Mcshield ( 61 Mb)
Please post yours![]()
-
30 on my notebook with XP
-
OS - Windows Vista Home Premium
No. of processes - 35
Available memory - 2.8 GB out of 3.5 GB (I have a 32 bit OS so the full 4 GB is not recognised)/
Process taking the most memory - dwm.exe (Desktop Window Manager) (59MB)
Although my notebook has now been on for about 12 hours, with uTorrent, Opera and Winamp being in use. -

As long as you have the good amount of RAM the number of processes don't count on performance. A clean install of vista home premium had 40 processes at start up. But now I have 55-60 processes running.
-
At one time I did everything to try and limit them, but for what? Besides what XP needs, I have an AV, Firewall, Malware, i8kfan, Wifi, and Bluetooth among other things starting. I'm fine with the reboot and start up times. With 2 gigs of ram, it's nothing I have to worry about. -
OS: Vista Home Premium SP1
No. of processes: 47
Available Memory: 0.99 GB of 2 GB
Process Taking Most Memory: Opera (361,500 KB)
Hehe, that's alot more than I would've guessed for Opera, but it does get up that high. Last reboot was about 10 hours ago, though I haven't even been home for most of that time. -
Vista Ultimate = 36 Processes
Windows XP Home = 15 Processes -
-
lmao. I have 61
on my laptop - vista premium.
-
I couldn't get my XP below 21 even when I interrupted its shutdown at the very last minute. How do you get it down to 15???
The Vista figure seems more possible - I can get it below 30 with a bunch of services disabled, but that XP figure is amazingly low. -
Processes: 55
Available memory: 1.63 GB out of 2.0 GB
Process taking up most memory: Explorer.exe  25 MB -
mattireland It used to be the iLand..
Windows XP SP2: 83 processes
-
-
On my main gaming rig I have about 23 processes running @ XP
My notebook has like 30. (XP also) -
wow, 83. i nearly chocked upon reading that. thats ALOT!!!
ive got 16. like usual. only shame my HDD is packed full. -
I cbb restarting to see how many are there on startup but right now 83 Processes (Vista Home Premium).. Generally when I check I get almost 100 though.. I've stopped a lot of programs from loading on boot-up so I'm guessing on start-up I'd probably have about 70-75. I dunno how much RAM is available but in Task Manager at the bottom it says 'Physical Memory: 52%' and I have 2GB RAM in this notebook.
My highest memory usage processes are (highest usage on top),
svchost.exe (95K)
dwm.exe (50K)
firefox.exe (37K)
avgrssvc.exe (29K) -
mattireland It used to be the iLand..
I'll name them all when I switch on that computer! I have loads of unnecessary stupid apps that I don't really need which I need to wipe off at some point - I think my HDD is overdue a format!
-
my desktop, which has Windows XP Pro, runs under 30 processes, usually 28 or 29 at startup. my notebook is currently running at 60 processes, so probably around 55-58 during startup.
-
I used to run XP with 29 processes, but Vista (fully optimized) starts with 45.
-
how comes vista starts witch such a high number of processes? i know most of the stuff in XP is stuff i dont need really....but....seems like nearly double as much in vista in some cases.
-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
My fully optimized vista starts with 36. I can shrink it down to 30 but those are processes which are not absolutely necessary but I want. Stuff like the fingerpint reader etc.
-
I have 15 processes on start up. My notebook is running Windows XP Professional SP2.
-
Seems silly to speed up your boot up time only to have to manually turn everything on. -
ive got near enough the same as JEDISOLO. i dont turn off anything, its just tuned. my wifi runs smooth...got antivirus and antispyware on too....to add something else...ive ALWAYS got objectdock on...start up and all...and yet im still on 16 processes.
alot of stuff i dont need. like print spooler.
for AV i use kaspersky. works a charm...and it hardly uses up resources.
im not saying go mad and kill all the processes to speed up anything ive got the ram..so what's the point....i just researched and found that half the stuff i dont need..so i experimented and stopped them..thats all. and im happy.
whatever makes you feel comfortable....stick with it! -
cant wait for MGS4 and devil may cry 4! -
I have 62 on XP.
-
31 processes on XP SP2
Antivirus: Avast Home(Free) and I dont use any other security suite.
The most resource hogs was explorer.exe -
Specs in sig. XP PRO w/ SP2. 35 processes at idle startup w/ AVG, Windows Firewall, ThinkVantage Power Manager, CPU meter (task manager minimized), & Windows Defender.
-
28 in Windows XP Home on a really old desktop with 192MB RAM......
a 1-2 minute start up. -
Here on my desktop, it's a paltry 27 processes. Still starts up waaaay slower than my laptop, though [as expected. This is an ancient P4 after all]. Right now, Firefox is using 134 MB of RAM [I have 768 MB total RAM lol].
On my CCleaner -> Startup, I only have the Anti-Virus in it -
i have vista home premium running 27 processes on startup
-
Vista home premium and i have 63 processes running.
-
-
-
Here's what I have running at startup. I'm using Wireless right now at work.
-
-
^What do you mean by a clock?
-
I've got 61 and there's absolutely nothing that I want to shut down
-
65 here (a bit less at boot, mayber 55-60), and what theZoid said. System is running great, boot time is acceptable. Why would I change anything?
-
Seriously, that's pretty impressive. How long does it take to reboot? -
-
*saving 30 seconds per boot, twice a day. -
jesidolo, could you post a picture of your services and those you disabled?
-
-
why faff i say. 28 secs, 1 minute, 20minutes to start up. why would it matter. save 24 days of youre life just booting in. you're gona waste it somewhere else...watching TV or something.
like JALF said. why would you want to change anything. unless you're not happy with it...theres no point in just doing it because others have such a small list of processes.
ive personally got bored of it all and decided to see what UBUNTU is like....hehehe...there's fast for you.
anyway... if you really want to tune up. a good place to see how you can tune you're computer would be this:

many vouch by it. -
