    Hey everyone,

I've been using linux for a while and had a program (informed by a, now missing, friend)

I took a screenshot that shows the RIGHT side of my desktop. It was an app that took over that side of the screen and showed the following:

If it's possible, does anyone know an app that could give me this similar information, customizeable, and preferably taking up 1 side, not the entire screen?

    Thanks in advance

Rainmeter is the conky of the Windows world.

Samurize is also worth a look. While it hasn't been updated in a few years, it worked great on Vista for me so I expect it should work just fine on 7.

Yeah, Rainmeter is probably the best option... You can download many themes and configurations for it. I run it, pretty good IMO.

Remember that constant system monitoring places a significant load on your machine. Unless you really enjoy the blinking lights, best to not run a monitor.

Agh. I guess that's how it is on Windows.. Conky used almost nothing.

Thanks for the help guys.. Rainmeter is so complicated, lol. I'll figure something out.. =\

    Here's a link to a conky-like skin for Rainmeter ( http://customize.org/rainmeter/skins/58704) and here's a link to another one ( http://browse.deviantart.com/customization/skins/sysmonitor/rainmeter/?qh=&section=&q=conky#/d1zwf02).

Both the original Rainmeter developer and the current developers value low resource usage. Rainmeter skins or Samurize configs with lots of animation and/or user interaction can tax your system; however this is no different than using a complex conky script. Text based skins such as the ones linked above and similar to your conky script, will display a wealth of information without chewing up CPU cycles.

Conky uses 'almost nothing' for itself, but the unix/linux system counters and routines it uses add up to quite a bit.

Same deal on windows. the display routines are pretty lightweight. gathering the info from system counters always adds to the system overhead.

I'm still running samurize and it doesn't use much, then again most processes don't tax an i7 quad. It's pretty light if you keep each instance decently small. Here's a screenshot of my current desktop without the taskbar that I built from scratch. If you like it and need help feel free to send me a pm.

Oh.. I see. I didn't really think about that.. Hopefully not too much system overhead =x running x2 athlon 6400+ with 2gb ddr2 lol.

    time will tell...

You are too kind sir. I may take you up on that offer if I have some trouble. Thank you so much!
