There are some programs I uninstalled through Programs and Features in Control Panel that still appear in the Startup menu in msconfig. (Winamp, Nero, and etc.) Is there a way to remove all traces of these programs that I no longer need? More importantly, is there a utility out there that deletes the files left over by programs already uninstalled?

If you go to Cleaner> Applications tab, you will see the applications CCleaner has recognized for cleaning.

Also run the CCleaner's registry cleaner to get rid all traces of it

no i think hes talking about removing stuff from msconfig in the startup tab

I would also like to clear this, the unchecked boxes like itunes and stuff that I do not longer have. Ccleaner doesn't clean it.

You have to use CCleaner to completely Delete the Startup Entry

Go to the Tools tab > Startup > delete from there

To uninstall programs completely, (files, folders, registry keys, etc.) use Revo Uninstaller. It's amazing and free.

As far as msconfig goes, try this.

McGrady, yes. CCleaner seems to just use the program's built in uninstaller.

    this registry edit should work
    1. type regedit in run
    2. navigate to HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE > software > Microsoft > Windows > current version > run.
    3. delete the keys which you doesnt wanna appear

as far as registry goes, i uninstalled something i dont use on my xp with advanced mode and i let it scan for the registry leftovers. it it safe to "select all" and delete it? i dont fuss with registry much so this looks pretty foreign to me.

In ccleaner under the registry category, is it safe to delete everything that is checked (twelve items)? I'm planning on trying revo uninstaller like ninjanoodles mentioned. It's okay to delete anything it finds?

Well, generally, yes. CCleaner has an option to back up registry changes (use it).

As far as Revo goes, I've never seen it list anything that shouldn't be removed. That said, you need to know what you're doing when messing with the registry. Revo creates a restore point (if I recall correctly) before it goes to work, so if worst comes to worst (and you have System Restore on), you can undo any damage (in theory).

As with all software, use at your own risk.

That was a very parenthetical post.
