The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

    What are the protection programs we should install in our pc or laptop ( Antivirus, spyware, trojan......) ? I just reinstall the OS but I don't know what programs to put in my pcs ???

    If you are looking for free antivirus programs, go for either Avast or AVG. Sygate Personal Firewall is a good free firewall program. So is the ZoneAlarm firewall, which is also free.

    Antispyware programs include Spybot (free), Ad-Aware (free) and Windows Defender (free).

    Good security suites to consider are Kaspersky and ZoneAlarm Internet Security. There are effective, and do not consume a lot of your system resources, unlike Norton/McAfee.

    Why does Avira never come up in free AV software discussions, just curious since most of the "reviews" that I've read seem to have it rated fairly highly

    It has a fairly large annoying popup every time you update... I think that's mostly what turns a lot of people off.

    I tried it for a while, it seemed very good apart from the ads.
