Hi,
if I put a clone of my XP pc onto my HP Pavilion Vista laptop, and then run Windows repair; what type of problems am I likely to run into?
I have C: and D: partitions on my XP pc and a C: and the factory restore partition on my laptop.
I have a Windows XP Pro slipstream disk.
Any help would be appreciated,
Mike

Unless the hardware is almost identical (and obviously it isn't), it won't work. Back in Win3.1, Win95 and even Win98, you could do this. But not with WinNT, Win2000, WinXP or Vista. Sorry.

don't try it , try a fresh install better, u ll need an XP edition with sata divers to read your harddisk while installing , also some driver may not work like remote and touch buttons

First of all, it's a clone of his XP--there is no harm in trying. He doesn't lose his original, and he doesn't physcially damage the laptop--worst case scenario is that it bluescreens
Second, it's a definite maybe that it sort kinda might work.
As long as you run the repair on the first boot, you might actually pull it off--I get a positive result about 50 percent of time.
Technically, unless it is a bios locked XP install, you might get it to work and you will simply have to re-activate.
Now, that out of the way, the question is are you legally entitled to do this. If this is a retail copy of XP that is legally transferable to another machine, you can certainly try.
If this is an xp install that came with the machine, you are legally not permitted to do what you are proposing, and it is far more likely it is BIOS locked and thus not likely to succeed -
Thanks for all the first replies.
Well it seems like if I'm determined to go back to Vista, which I'm not completely unhappy with, that I could download all the drivers from HP and then do a clean XP Pro Install (I have a corporate edition).
If it all works, then maybe I could try the clone and reinstall the drivers that worked?
I'll make a clone of my laptop first of course.
