I have a lamp on my desk which was plugged in the same power bar as my laptop. Whenever I'd turn the lamp on or off while the laptop is on, it would cause the laptop to beep (the same sound Windows 7 makes when a USB peripheral is just plugged in or removed).

Last night, I lowered the lid of the laptop to put it in sleep mode, then I turned off the lamp: as soon as I did that, the light that indicates the HDD activity went from white to amber (this colour usually indicates a problem). I then opened the laptop but it wouldn't turn back on. I then did a reset - by holding down the power button until everything went off - and tried to turn it on, but to no avail. I then unplugged it and removed the battery, put it back, re-plugged it and tried again: no success.

I then went to sleep and tried again this morning and ... it started, offering the Safe Mode with a message like: Windows was shut down to prevent damage to your computer, blah, blah...

    Any idea what happened?

BTW, now I plug the lamp away from the laptop: no more beeping...
