Running Vista Ultimate with SP1. Occasionally I have noticed my fan speed pickup and running task manager I see DLLHost is using about 45-50% of the CPU. It happened tonight so I ran Sysinternals Process explorer. It shows that among other threads run by dllhost is the Quartz.dll and it was responsible for the high CPU use.

This file is part of the Direct Show Runtime. Details in the attachment below.

Have any of you seen this sort of problem? I did kill the thread and things seem to run just fine. I am about to reboot and see if the file is reloaded.

Edit: just rebooted and there is no sign of DLLhost let alone Quartz.dll. That's odd as DLLHost had a few other threads besides Quartz.dll before I rebooted. I'll monitor for the reappearance of DLhost and Quartz.dll

A program your ran must have triggered quartz.dll . Run all your usual programs and check again if it pops up

Precisely what I am doing this very moment.

But like I said earlier DLLhost had five of six threads, one of which was Quartz.dll. I still see no signs of DLLhost yet. I will continue to monitor for it and Quartz.dll.

    Odd.

If the problem persists, try creating a new user profile.

Before, I had a problem with csrss.exe hogging cpu for no reason. The solution was to create a new profile. Apparently the user profile was corrupt or something..
